Before they left for the base Sam went to her office, gathering up her laptop she walked into the garage where she found Grace seated at the worktable. The double was monitoring the power output from the generator as she told Janet she would do. Hearing Sam enter she turned to face her, “You are leaving now?”

Sam moved to stand beside her, setting the laptop on the table, “Yeah…we should be gone for a couple of hours. I have some things I want to check on while I’m there, if my idea pans out then I will discuss everything with you later today. Oh…if you get bored while we are gone here is my laptop; you can check out the internet. Try not to cause any trouble though okay?” she told the replicator.

“I shall endeavor to behave myself,” Grace replied with a tilt of her head and a grin.

Laughing at the grin Sam clapped her twin on the shoulder, “See you in a little while,” she said and then left the garage.

Janet met her at the front door and the couple left the house to drive to the base. During the drive, Janet could not resist asking, “So when are you going to tell me this plan of yours?”

“I’ll tell you the same thing I told Grace; I have some stuff to check out and then I’ll discuss it with you two this afternoon,“ Sam replied, focusing her attention on the road.

Realizing she would not get anything else out of Sam until she was ready to talk Janet did not question her further, but she had a sneaking suspicion what her partner‘s idea was. Soon they reached the base, parked and entered after passing through the checkpoint; it was not until they were in the elevator that Janet noticed Sam fidgeting.

“What’s wrong?” she asked Sam.

“Oh...nothing just nervous about this whole surgery thing,” replied the taller woman.

“I told you it’s a simple procedure and will be over with in an hour; nothing for you to worry about,” explained Janet once again.

Sam shrugged, “Can’t help it; I just worry about you,” she whispered.

Janet settled for nudging her partner with her shoulder since she could not hug her in the elevator, “I like that you worry about me, but you don’t have too,” she whispered back.

When the doors opened, they walked out and down the hall to the infirmary where Dr. Warner waited to get started.

“Ah…Dr. Fraiser, punctual as ever; Are you ready to get this over with?” the man asked.

“Yes and thank you again for doing this on such short notice,” she told him.

“Well let’s just chalk it up as my good deed for the month; Colonel Carter is there something you needed?” Warner asked when he noticed Sam standing behind the other woman.

“Oh…no, I’m her ride,” explained Sam.

“Very well then…you can come back in about an hour, she should be recovered enough to leave by then, “ he told her and then left to scrub up.

Sam squeezed Janet’s hand, “See you in an hour,“ she said giving her partner a smile.

“Yep…an hour; now go find out what you need to so you can tell me what’s going on in that sneaky head of yours,” Janet replied.

Sam left the infirmary and headed back to the elevator, knowing it would not take her long to do the research she decided to get some breakfast in the commissary and then start her search. She punched the level needed, exiting when the doors opened she made her way to the commissary; after helping herself to some fruit and cereal she found a table to sit at. She was just about to take a bite of her cereal when a shadow appeared over the table from behind her.

“Sam?” Daniel’s voice asked.

“Yes…it’s me Daniel,” she replied taking her bite.

Her friend sat down at the table with her, “Just checking, you’re in civvies so I didn’t want to confuse you with the replicator,” he said in relief.

“Grace,” she said taking another bite of cereal.

This earned her one of his patented confused looks, “Grace?”

“Yup…after all you were the one who questioned her about being an individual; thought it might help her out if she had her own name,” explained Sam.

“Ah…okay then…where is she by the way?” he asked.

“My lab…watching over some experiments I left to run while I’m gone,” she told him.

“Why are you on base if you’re supposed to be on leave? Jack told me Janet said you needed another week off,” Daniel said, growing curious.

“Janet’s having a procedure done today and I came with her to drive home when it’s over,“ seeing him start to speak she added, “nothing serious…she just wanted to help out a relative,” she said then explained their cover story.

“Well that’s a good thing I guess; oh…I remembered what I wanted to tell you, they found the weapon Anubis is looking for,” Daniel told her with a happy smile.

“Really…do you know anything about it yet?” she asked him, her curiosity getting the best of her before she realized that maybe asking Daniel about it wasn’t such a good idea as he began to babble about all they discovered.

Sam continued eating her breakfast as Daniel rambled on, when he reached the part about what the weapon was capable of she nearly choked on her cereal. He thumped her between the shoulders, “Are you okay?”

“What was that last part you said?” she asked regaining her composure.

“According to the writing on the temple walls the weapon is capable of destroying specific targets throughout the galaxy, the Asgard want to use it to destroy the replicators once and for all,” he told her.

“That’s what I thought you said; has Jack agreed to help them do this?” she asked him.

“As far as I know…yes; but they need you to help figure out how to make it work. Until you come back on duty Teal’c and a group of Jaffa will try to keep the weapon from being discovered. It’s just a matter of time before Anubis finds it though,“ he said his face carrying a worried expression.

“Well then I guess I better gets some rest; maybe I can talk Janet into letting me come back early since we’re pressed for time,” she told her friend.

Glancing at her watch Sam rose from the table, “I need to run by my lab and then back to the infirmary; could you keep me in the loop about what else you discover about this weapon?” she asked him picking up her tray.

“Sure Sam, I’ll call you if I find out anything new,” he assured her and then gave her a little wave as she walked away from the table.

Quickly disposing of her breakfast remains Sam left the commissary at a fast walk, she reached the elevators, swiping her card through she bounced on the balls of her feet waiting for the doors to open. When it finally arrived she entered hitting the button for level nineteen, she paced back and forth until the car stopped and ran out when the doors opened. Quickly reaching her lab she opened the door, sliding in and shutting it quickly before anyone walked past.Heading straight for her computer, she booted it up and began typing. Thirty minutes later she left her lab, stopping to stick a sign on the door that read, ‘DO NOT DISTURB…EXPERIMENT IN PROGRESS’.

Stepping back to look at the sign she thought, ‘That should keep everyone far away from my lab.’ No one wanted to ruin any of her work; not only would it make her angry but it might be dangerous as well. Turning around she left to go to the infirmary and check on Janet since it was now approaching the hour limit.

When she reached the infirmary she discovered Janet waiting on her, the doctor was sitting on a bed dressed and ready to go, a small white cooler box sat next to her. Sam took the wheelchair one of the nurses brought in telling her she would help Janet. She pushed the chair over to the bed, ”Hey there…you ready to leave?”

“Yes please…before Warner comes back and starts telling me what to do; like I don’t know already, the man is hopeless,” Janet replied rolling her eyes.

Sam laughed at the face her partner made; helping her into the chair, they left the infirmary. When they reached topside Sam wheeled her over to the van and not letting Janet get out of the chair, she lifted her up placing her in the seat.

“You’re not supposed to be lifting anything heavy yet Sam,” admonished the doctor.

“You’re not heavy…so I wasn’t,” Sam commented and then she rolled the chair back to the entrance, passing it off to one of the SFs to take back down.

Sam returned and climbed into the driver’s seat; once they were underway Janet asked, “Did you find out all you needed to know?”

“Oh yeah and then some…were going to have to speed things up a bit I’m afraid; but I’ll explain in more detail when we get home and Grace is with us,“ Sam said stalling any further questions from her partner on the subject.

“How are you feeling?” she asked the doctor.

“A little groggy and sore, but I expected that; just stick me on the couch when we get home, I’ll be fine,” replied Janet.

Sam nodded, giving her partner a smile; soon they arrived home, Sam picked up the cooler and got out to help Janet into the house, before she could even try to help her partner Janet stopped her, “Don’t you dare; I can walk,” she grumbled at the taller woman.

“Ah…but you don’t have to,” Sam remarked, turning from the van door she called out, “Grace!”

The garage door lifted up enough to let the replicator slip out; closing it behind her, she jogged down the drive to the van, “You require my assistance?”

“Carry her into the house please,” Sam said to her twin as she walked away to go unlock the front door.

Grace picked the doctor up with no problem, closing the van door with her foot; she walked up the pathway to the house. Janet glared at Sam as they passed her going into the house, “Grace put me down,” she ordered when they were in the foyer.

Grace turned to look at Sam, the doctor still held in her arms. Sam pointed towards the couch and the replicator carried Janet into the living room setting her down gently on the couch. Janet sat there arms crossed, glaring at both of them as Sam came to stand by her twin, “Dammit…I’m not an invalid,” she muttered.

Sam handed her the cooler, “Well you said you were sore, why make it worse,” she commented to her partner, Sam turned to her twin, “Grace sit down please; I have some things I need to tell you about before you get started on the next stage.”

The replicator took a seat next to Janet on the couch and the two watched as Sam paced back and forth in front of them, trying to figure out where to start. Finally she sighed and began with the information Daniel told her about the weapon and what the plans for it where. When she finished the explanation Grace was silent for a few minutes as she processed all the information Sam told them.

“We shall be destroyed,” she stated, “If this is so then I will not continue with the next stage.”

“Sam isn’t there something you can do…we can’t get this far and just stop; it’s not fair,” Janet said her voice filled with emotion, she wanted Grace to find happiness with her own companion.

“Yes…there is something and I’ve already done it,” Sam told them, ”you can complete the final stage Grace because you’re not going to be destroyed…in fact you not going to be any where near this galaxy when the weapon is fired.”

This statement earned her a confused look from her twin but Janet’s face brightened, “Did you do what I think you did?” she asked eyeing Sam.

“If what you think I did means getting them stationed on the Daedalus then yep,” Sam replied a huge smile on her face.

Grace was still confused, “How will this prevent our destruction?” she asked the two women.

Janet turned to face the double, “The Daedalus is scheduled to leave for the Pegasus galaxy at the end of the week, if you leave on it then the weapon won’t affect you,” explained the doctor.

Sam jumped into the conversation, “I sent in the transfer orders while I waited on Janet; now I just have to make up some credentials for the two of you and its set.” Then she added, “Of course you won’t be able to use your true form that would give you away, so I’ll have to find some photos to use for you to choose new ones from.”

“I believe this will be sufficient, as long as we are together,” stated Grace.

“Well then…let’s get to work on that ‘we’ part; here is the bone marrow sample along with a blood sample and…” Janet plucked a few hairs from her head, “here’s the hair sample,” she said handing the samples to Grace.

The replicator looked at the samples in her hands, her eyes began to mist over and then she regained her composure, “Thank you…I shall begin at once with your permission.” she said looking back and forth between the two women.

Sam grinned, “Go…go…we have four days before you need to leave, they won’t do anything with the weapon until I get back to figure out how it works,” she told her.

Grace jumped up from the couch and walked quickly towards the garage to begin the next stage in creating her companion, leaving Sam standing there watching her disappear. Sighing she sat on the couch next to Janet, who put an arm around her pulling her close, “You’re sneaky,” Janet remarked.

“I am aren’t I? But you figured out what I was going to do…so I can’t be that sneaky,” replied Sam as she lay her head on Janet’s shoulder.

“I just know how the wheels turn in that blonde head,” chuckled Janet, ruffling Sam’s hair, “it was a good plan.”

“I thought so,” Sam said smugly, sitting back up she looked at Janet and then leant in giving her a kiss, lingering for just few minutes and then breaking away, she asked, “So…what can I get to make you more comfortable?”

“Coffee and food,” Janet replied grinning.

“Coffee and food coming right up; want some of the leftover Chinese?” asked Sam, standing up she lifted Janet’s legs onto the couch.

“That’s fine with me,” replied Janet as she pulled the blanket from the back of the couch and covered up with it.

Sam nodded and giving Janet another quick kiss left to fix her partner something to eat. She returned shortly with a hot cup of coffee for the doctor, handing it to her she grinned, “I set the timer before we left; knew you would want some.” Janet threw a pillow at Sam’s retreating form but could not help but smile as she sipped the hot drink.

*********************************

After Janet finished her meal, she decided to take a nap. Sam sat with her on the couch until the doctor dozed off; making sure her partner slept comfortably she then left to go check on Grace.

Sam slowly opened the door to the garage, mainly because she did not know what to expect and then because she did not want to disturb the replicator if she was involved in some intricate process. Peeking her head in Sam found Grace sitting on the stool at the worktable, the cooler box set before her, just staring at it.

Walking quietly into the room Sam came to stand next to her, “What are doing?”

“I am thinking,” replied the double.

“What is there to think about? You have the samples, you have the materials and all you have to do is start the process; I thought you would have already begun by now actually, “ Sam told her.

“I was thinking of all you and Janet have done to help me get to this point, the rules you have broken and the risks you have taken; but I don’t think I deserve this now,” Grace said softly.

Pulling another stool over Sam sat down next to her twin, “What do you mean you don’t deserve it?” she asked, growing confused.

“I lied to you,” Grace said so softly that Sam barely heard her say it.

“Lied? When…and about what?” asked Sam.

Grace turned to look at the woman next her; her twin in so many ways but not, “When I stabbed you in the chest; I lied…Fifth was not controlling me; I wanted to get to the SGC, to get closer to Janet,” she admitted her voice still low, “all this happened because I wanted what you have.”

Sam leaned back on the stool, watching the look on the replicator’s face, she could see the anguish and indecision written on the face that mirrored hers; sighing she placed a hand on Grace’s shoulder, “I knew,” was all she said.

The double’s head turned quickly and a look of confusion crossed her face, “You knew? How…why did you do all of this if you knew?” asked Grace.

“How… because I blocked the link with Fifth before you stabbed me. As to why I still helped you…someone once told me I could do anything I put my mind to, that I had great potential,” Sam said looking Grace straight in the eye, “ all it takes is that one person believing in whatever you do and it will happen.”

“Who said this to you?” asked the replicator.

Sam turned her head looking back into the house, “The woman asleep on the couch; the woman who makes my life worthwhile.” Sam said her voice full of the love she felt for Janet, “All of the things I’ve been through and done don’t matter; it’s Janet that does, as long as she believes in me then I can do it.”

“But…” Sam cut her off, “No buts…you’ve proven yourself to me and too her; I might have done the same thing if it were my only chance at finding the other half of my soul. Now…don’t you have something to get started on?” she asked squeezing the shoulder under her hand.

Grace sat up straight, taking the top of the cooler, she reached in taking the samples out and rising from the stool, she walked over to the shimmering wall and held them up to it. Two simple form replicators appeared from the wall and took the samples from her hands, she turned to get the final sample and found Sam standing behind her.

“May I?” she asked.

Grace nodded and stepped out of the way allowing Sam to walk up to the wall where she placed the hair sample in between the forelimbs of a third simple replicator. It melted into the wall and she stepped back; Grace tugged on her arm, pulling her further from the wall as it began rippling. Sam watched as the metallic wall moved away from the garage wall and formed a large freestanding rectangle, the many layers beginning to shuffle and ripple.

“How long will it take?” asked Sam, her voice filled with awe as she watched the shape move.

“A day perhaps longer…I will have to regulate the power input to insure they do not go too quickly,” Grace told her.

“So the little guys do the work,” Sam remarked, “like drones in a hive.”

“Yes…that would be the best description; now all there is to do is wait,” replied Grace.

Sam pulled a stool over and sat down; Grace looked at her, “What are you doing?”

“I’m waiting…well at least until Janet wakes up; I have nothing else to do,” Sam replied with a shrug of her shoulders.

Grace pulled the other stool over at sat beside her; after a few moments of silence she asked, “Does Janet know of my deception?”

“Of course…it was one of the first things I told her after I woke up and we were alone,” Sam replied, “we have no secrets from each other.”

“Yet she still treated me as if nothing happened?” questioned Grace, more to herself than Sam.

“You helped save my life besides that you were made from me, she knew you had potential based on that fact alone,” remarked Sam.

Grace had nothing else to say, she was still in shock that they had known of her deception all along yet not only did they still help make her feel welcome but also to create a companion as well. The pair said nothing else for a long time, they just sat watching the block before them ripple and move as the simple-form replicators worked on creating new life.

************************************

The pain in her hip woke Janet up, she tried to turn over and the stabbing bolt caused her to pop awake.

“Ow…ow…,” she muttered trying to turn back without sending another sharp pain through her lower body, succeeding she pulled herself up into a sitting position. Glancing around the living room she found herself all alone, raising up some she peered over the back of the couch looking down the hallway and saw the open garage door. She chuckled, it figured; Sam would disappear into the garage as soon as she could. Janet only hoped she was not distracting Grace from her work.

Pulling the blanket off and tossing it over the back of the couch the doctor slowly swung her legs around until her feet touched the floor; gritting her teeth she stood up, “Okay hard part over, time to work off the stiffness,“ she grumbled.

Using the arm of the couch to hold onto, Janet took a few slow steps towards the hallway, wincing with every movement of her right leg, making it to the staircase she took a moment to rest and then slowly limped down the hall, working the stiffness out of her hip and pelvis. It was slow going but she finally made it to the open doorway, resting her weight on her left leg the doctor leaned against the doorjamb.

The sight that greeted her was rather interesting, her partner and Grace sat on stools watching a large block of chips undulate, the surface glittering from the light cast by the worktable lamp. Janet stood there watching them for several minutes, every now and then Sam would point and ask a question which Grace would calmly answer; hating to interrupt them but she had to,she knocked on the doorjamb.

Sam whirled around upon hearing the knock, seeing Janet leaning in the doorway she jumped off the stool and in two strides stood beside her.

“Are you okay…do you need something…why didn’t you just yell for me?” Sam’s questions rushed out.

Janet could not help herself and burst out laughing at the fast ramble of questions; when she finally stopped she had tears leaking from the corners of her eyes, “I’m fine sweetie; I needed to get up and walk to work off the stiffness. How are things going in here?” she asked.

Grace turned on her stool, “Everything is fine,” she replied to Janet’s question.

Sam grinned at her partner, “Your twin should be making an appearance sometime tomorrow,” she told the doctor.

“Well then that’s excellent,” she said to them, “Are you ready to order something for dinner, I’m not up to cooking tonight,” Janet asked her partner.

“Sure…or I can go pick something up if you want me to,” Sam told her moving closer until she could grasp Janet around the waist, transferring her weight to lean on her instead of the doorjamb.

“Pizza is fine with me; I can go order it,” Janet said as she tried to take a step away from Sam.

“Uh uh…no you don’t,” Sam said sweeping the doctor off her feet, “I’m carrying you back to the couch.

“Samantha Carter put me down! I need to walk,” Janet said in a serious tone.

“I’ll come back to check on you later Grace,” Sam threw over her shoulder as she carried the still protesting doctor back to the couch.

The replicator grinned at her twin’s actions, turning back to watch the block, she could not help but wonder how her companion would react to her, if they too would be as happy as their originals. She patiently watched as the block rippled and bulged as the simple form replicators worked.

***************************************

Several hours later Sam entered the garage again; she just wanted to check on Grace before they went to bed. The replicator still sat on her stool watching the block; she would reach over and adjust a few controls on a panel, regulating the power input to the mass of moving chips. As Sam grew closer, she saw that Grace was not alone, a ball of grey fur lay curled up on the worktable next to her. Sam walked up and ran her fingers through its fur.

“I thought I saw a streak run in when the pizza guy came to the door,” she remarked, scratching Einstein behind the ears, “He’s not bothering anything is he?”

Grace smiled, she reached over, petting the cat, “After our first initial meeting he calmed down; I do not smell like you,” she told Sam, “I find his presence soothing, he may stay.”

“Good then he can keep you company,” commented Sam, “so…sometime tomorrow huh?”

“Yes…most likely around mid-day; I will alert you before I transfer Janet’s memories to her,” Grace replied.

“I’ll be in my office working on those credentials for the two of you,” Sam told her, “well…I need to go help Janet out of the tub, she’s probably all pruney by now and then we’re turning in; I’ll see you in the morning.”

“Good night Sam and thank you once again,” Grace said to her.

Sam ruffled the cat’s fur one more time and looked up at Grace, “No problem…see you in the morning,” she replied and then left the replicator to keep watch once more.

There was really nothing left for her to do but watch the power input and output, the rippling of the block had begun to slow as the process neared completion. Grace leaned an arm against the tabletop and propped her head up; her eyes fixed upon the slower movements of the block. Something bumped her hand and she turned her head to find Einstein sitting by her, he bumped up against her hand again and she began stroking his fur. Not satisfied with the petting, the cat climbed down onto her lap and curled up in a ball making himself comfortable. Grace looked down at the grey ball of fur and smiled, running her hand across his back she resumed her watch. This was how she spent the time waiting, staring at the block and running her fingers through the soft fur of the purring animal in her lap. His company helping her pass the time until she could begin the transfer and welcome her new companion.
