“What!” Sam exclaimed when her initial shock passed.
“I would like you to help me create another human form replicator; one that resembles Janet,” stated Grace again.
Sam stuttered, “I don’t…think that’s…a good idea…what you’re asking…” her partner cut her off.
“Yes…we’ll help you,” Janet told the replicator.
Sam turned to stare at the doctor, a shocked expression on her face once more; recovering slightly she spoke, “Janet are you insane?”
Janet held up a hand stopping any further questions from her partner, “Would you excuse us for a little while Grace?” the doctor asked looking up at the replicator.
Grace nodded, “I shall clean up the mess I created while you discuss this,” she told them.
Janet rose from the bench, she glanced down at Sam who now had a troubled look on her face, “Come on…let’s go to your lab where we can talk about this without being overheard,” the doctor said, reaching down she grabbed Sam’s hand and tugged on it until she stood. Janet gave Grace a little wave as they walked towards the doors.
The doctor let loose her grip on Sam’s hand as they exited and spoke to the airmen still waiting outside, “Gentlemen I suggest you give her a little time to clean up the mess before you go in.” Several ’yes m’am’s’ answered as the pair walked to the elevator.
The trip to Sam’s lab was made in silence, Janet glanced up at her partner’s face as they waited for the elevator to arrive at the lab level; Sam‘s brow creased in thought and she chewed on her lower lip. Janet knew she was trying to come to terms with the replicator’s asked favor and her response. When the doors opened, Sam walked out quickly, her long strides carrying her away from the doctor as she went towards her lab.
Janet let her storm away and followed at a slower pace, when she reached the lab the doctor discovered the door left open and her partner pacing back and forth, hands clasped behind her back. Janet closed the door and walked over to take a seat at the counter, waiting for the outburst she knew was about to take place.
“What in the hell were you thinking agreeing with that request?” Sam said suddenly as she paced, “Why would you agree to something like that?”
Sam continued to pace, “Not to mention you did it without asking me first and there’s the little fact that Jack will never agree to letting us do it either,” she rushed out.
Janet took a deep breath, “Why did I have to ask you first?”
Sam stopped pacing to face her partner, “Because…” her shoulders slumped, “just because it’s something we should have discussed first,” she said sighing.
“But it’s my body she wants to copy, why would I discuss it with you first unless of course you’re jealous and you don’t want to help Grace by sharing me,” Janet replied giving Sam a stern look.
“Jealous? No…I’m not jealous,” Sam said a little too quickly and began pacing again.
Janet sighed and rose from the stool; she walked over to her upset partner grabbing the back of her t-shirt, stopping her motion. Sam turned to face her, “Why Janet? Why would you want to be the template for a new replicator?”
Janet threaded her arms around her vexed partner, pulling her close, she rested her head on Sam’s chest speaking softly, “Sam I’ve seen her watch us when she thinks we aren’t paying attention; the look on her face is heartbreaking. I’m not even sure Grace realizes she’s doing it either, it’s during those times I have to remind myself she’s not you and that a hug won’t help take the look from her face; it would just remind her she’s alone in this world.”
Sam sighed, “But Jan…” a finger over her lips stopped her next words.
“What better companion for a copy of you then a copy of me?” The doctor asked gazing up at her partner; that question earned her a small smile from the taller woman.
“Well…we do make a good team,” replied Sam.
“Exactly,” Janet said grinning, she raised on her tiptoes to place a soft kiss on Sam’s lips, letting it linger for a few moments; breaking the kiss she leant back, “and I still think you’re jealous.”
Sam gave her a wide-eyed look and then ducked her head a blush spreading across her cheeks, “Okay…maybe just a little bit,” she admitted finally.
Janet flashed a smile at her, “Well you’ve no reason to be…I’m very happy with the original model thank you,” she said. Sam grinned and hugged her tight, lifting her off her feet.
Once Sam placed her back on the ground Janet asked, “Now…will you help her?”
“Yeah…I’ll help Grace build her own little replifraiser,” she said grinning, “but I don’t think Jack will let us do it.”
Janet poked her in the ribs, “That was for the little remark and who says we have to tell him?” she remarked.
“Janet…doing something like this would be so against regulations it’s not funny,” Sam replied.
“Need I remind you what we do now is against regulations too and it didn’t stop us from being together,” Janet told her with a grin.
“Good point you have there my dear; but I still would have to figure out how to do it; we can’t build her here at the base,” said Sam.
Janet could see the gears turning as Sam’s face scrunched up in thought. She smiled, now that Sam accepted the idea she would figure something out. Now they just had to tell Grace they would help her. Just then a knock on the door sounded, Sam broke her grasp around Janet’s waist and walked over to answer the knock. Opening the door she found Grace standing in the hallway; Sam motioned for her to enter.
The replicator walked over to stand beside Janet, “Have you reached a decision?” she asked looking back and forth between the two.
Sam nodded, walking to stand before her twin, “No one deserves to live out their life alone. So yes…we’ll help you build a companion.”
A wide smile appeared on the replicator’s face and she pulled the pair into a hug, “Thank you,” she whispered, hugging them tight.
“Grace…ease up, humans need to breath,” gasped Sam, as the hug grew tight.
“I am sorry,” Grace said releasing her hold on the pair, “I am very happy, this is good yes?”
“Yes that is very good,“ Janet told her, “but we have a few things to figure out before we can get started. I’ll let you two discuss those because I need to get back to the infirmary,” Janet informed them.
“Thank you once again Janet, you do not know what this means to me,” Grace said to the doctor.
“Oh I think I do,” replied Janet, “just let me know what you two come up with. I’ll see you later,” she told Sam giving her a quick kiss goodbye and then left the pair to come up with a way to create her copy.
*******************************
Several hours later Janet received a phone call from Sam asking her partner to come back to her lab. The doctor told Beth where she would be if they needed her and she made her way back to the lab to see what plan the pair cooked up.
The first thing she noticed when she walked in the lab where large sheets of paper spread on the countertop. Walking up she saw they contained a set of blueprints for some sort of machinery. She looked up at the two on the other side of the counter, “Is this what you need to build?”
“Yep…and we can do it using spare parts from the storerooms. I even figured out how to get them off base,” Sam told her grinning.
“Off base?” asked the doctor giving the pair a confused look.
“We will be unable to build this here because of the cameras in every lab and the possibility of building here in Sam’s lab would lead to its discovery,” Grace informed her.
“That’s where you come into the plan; have you turned in the report from my check-up this morning?” Sam asked the doctor.
“No…not yet; Why?” Janet asked.
“Good…tear it up and write a new one saying I’m not ready for gate travel yet; in fact say that I’m spending too many hours in my lab and not getting enough rest,” replied Sam.
“I still don’t understand how that’s going to help you get all the materials you need off base Sam,” Janet said giving her partner an exasperated look.
“Ah ha…I will go to Jack and ask if I can sign out some stuff to fiddle with at home…since you can keep an eye on how long I work. If I start spouting geek speak at him he’ll just tell me to go do whatever just to get me to shut-up,” a grinning Sam told her.
Janet thought for a few moments, “But how can Grace help if you build this at home?”
Grace spoke up, “Like this,” and then she morphed into an non-descript airman, “I will assist the Colonel in moving the equipment to her home,” she shimmered returning to her own form; “If I do not return, no one will be the wiser,” she stated.
Janet looked at the pair, she had one more question, “And what about them not seeing you anywhere on the cameras?” she said looking at Grace.
“Oh I have that figured out too,” Sam said practically bouncing in her seat, “if they see her enter my lab and not come out they’ll just think she’s in here working on something for me; in fact I’m going to tell Jack that. He’ll just be happy she’s not wandering around the base.”
Janet gave her partner a look, “You’re all excited about this now aren’t you?”
Sam ducked her head, “Um yeah…I’ve been talking with Grace about it and I see what you said earlier was true; she needs someone who completes her, who better than another you,” she told the doctor.
Janet clapped her hands together, “Well then…I guess I have report to re-write; when are you two going to start moving the equipment?”
“Hopefully today, as soon as you finish that report. Now hurry and get that done, I’ll take it to Jack and then do my little speech,” Sam told her grinning.
“Okay…okay, I’ll call you when it’s ready,” she told her grinning partner and then left the pair to fine-tune the blueprints.
Twenty minutes later Janet called Sam telling her to come get the report. When Sam entered the infirmary Janet motioned for her to follow and they walked to her office, once in Janet turned to her asking, “How long will it take you to do this? Because I have to let him know how much longer before you can travel through the gate.”
“A week...maybe less,“ Sam told her.
Janet nodded and writing that on the report, she handed it to Sam, “Good luck,” she said.
“Thanks…I’ll be back in a little bit,” Sam said and then left the office.
Janet sat down behind her desk, resting her elbows on the surface and propping her head in her hands, “I hope we can pull this off,“ she muttered.
“As do I,” a voice said from the doorway.
Janet jumped, “Dammit Grace, don’t sneak up on me like that,” she grumbled.
The replicator entered the room, “I am sorry…I hoped you were used to me by now,” she said softly.
“I am…it’s just that I wasn’t paying attention, my thoughts were occupied with this caper we’re about to try and pull,” Janet told her.
“I have faith in Sam,” said Grace.
“Well…faith huh? You’re just growing in leaps and bounds Grace,” Janet said to her smiling, “What will you need from me to make this copy?” the doctor asked.
Grace perked up, “Several samples of your DNA and I will need to merge with you to scan your brain patterns,” she informed the doctor and then added quickly, “It will cause you no pain or harm Janet.”
Janet thought for a few minutes then answered, “Blood, hair or skin would provide DNA samples but the best thing to use would be bone marrow,” she said to Grace, “I could get Warner to do a biopsy; I’ll just tell him I need to know if I’m a match for a sick friend.”
“You would do this for me?” Grace asked.
“Well…we’ve already set the events in motion might as well be as thorough as possible,“ Janet told her, “let me see if he can do it tomorrow.”
Grace nodded and then left the doctor to make her phone call. She walked back out into the infirmary her thoughts in a whirl. They were really going to help her; she would no longer be alone. Walking over to sit on an empty bed the replicator attempted to contain her excitement and waited for Sam to return to see if they could truly begin to make her Janet.
***************************
Sam took a deep breath and knocked on the closed door. She heard a reply to come in and opened the door, seeing Jack sitting at his desk. She walked up and tossed the report in front of him, “Bad news,” she grumbled.
He picked up the report glancing over it, “What? I thought she said with a week off you would be better?” he asked looking confused.
“She also said I could work in my lab but apparently I’m doing too much of that or I’m just not healing fast enough,” she replied shrugging.
“Dammit Carter…I need you off world helping Teal’c,” he muttered throwing the report down.
“Well she said another week and I should be fine…if I cut down on my lab time,” she grumbled sounding dejected, “but I did talk her into letting me bring some stuff home to work on since she can just drag me away whenever she thinks I’ve been working to long,” Sam told him, perking up a little.
“What kind of stuff?” Jack asked.
Sam began rattling off machinery terms and what she would be doing; she watched his face glaze over as the techno speak went over his head. Finally he waved a hand at her to stop, “You’re not going to blow anything up are you?” he asked raising an eyebrow at her.
“Oh God no…you know what would happen to me if I blew up the garage? If the explosion didn’t kill me Janet would,” she replied with a grin.
“Fine…take what you need then and I guess I’ll see you back in a week,” Jack sighed, “I sure as hell can’t argue with Fraiser about it,” he muttered.
Sam turned to leave but stopped, turning back to him she spoke, “I’m going to leave some experiments running; Grace has volunteered to keep an eye on them so she’s going to stay in my lab.”
Jack gave her an odd look, “Grace? Who’s Grace?”
“The replicator,” Sam told him.
“You named it?” he asked sounding surprised.
Sam glared at him, “Yes we gave her a name,” she replied emphasizing the word her.
Jack held up his hands, “Okay…fine…whatever, she can stay in your lab; now go get better I need you back healthy,” he said making a shooing motion with one hand.
Sam walked out the door and then stuck her head back around, “Can I borrow an airman or two to move stuff to my house?”
“Yes…now go!” he told her.
Sam strolled away from the General’s office with a huge grin on her face thinking, ‘Mission accomplished!’
***********************************************
Sam practically bounced her way back to the infirmary she was so thrilled the plan worked. Seeing Grace sitting on the empty bed she motioned her to follow to Janet’s office. Once they were inside Sam closed the door and turned to her, “Operation Replifraiser is a go!” she said all excited.
Grace smiled and then tilted her head giving Sam a confused look, “Replifraiser?” she asked.
“Well yeah…I overheard some of the scientists calling you Replicarter so it just fit,” Sam replied.
The replicator thought on this for a few moments and then nodded, ”It is fitting.”
“Good now we need to go start moving equipment, I need the van keys,” she said to Janet.
Janet reached in a desk drawer, removing her purse she dug out the keys and tossed them to Sam, “Are you going to be finished by the time my shift is over? If not I can get Beth to drop me off at the house on her way home,” she asked her partner.
“We should be done by then; I’m going to have Grace do all the heavy lifting, so it won’t take long to move stuff,” Sam replied.
“Well call me if it takes longer than you expect,” Janet told her.
Sam gave her a little salute and grabbed hold of Grace dragging her from the office.
The two look-a-likes traveled down to the equipment storerooms, where Sam began pointing out the bits and pieces they would need; Grace loaded the machinery onto a pallet trolley and once done with the loading they left the storeroom to go to the vault storing the neutronium. Grace followed behind Sam pulling the trolley full of equipment, upon reaching the vault the guards standing watch stopped Sam.
“I’m sorry Colonel she can’t go in with you, General O’Neill’s orders,” the man stated.
“I have to get three crates of neutronium out Sergeant and they weigh a few hundred pounds apiece, do you want to carry them for me?” Sam said raising an eyebrow, she turned away and nodded to Grace who then knelt down and lifted the entire pallet of equipment with one hand, held it for a minute then set it back down.
The guard looked stunned, “Uh…no m’am…I guess since she’s with you its okay, just this once,” he told her.
“Thank you Sergeant,” Sam replied and then she swiped her card through the reader; the door popped open and she entered followed by the replicator. They quickly found the crates and Grace stacked them one atop the other, lifting the heavy weight with ease, she exited the vault to set them on the pallet with the other equipment.
Sam gave the Sergeant a salute and they walked away from the vault back towards the elevators. Once there Sam punched the level for the loading dock and soon they exited to place the pallet of equipment near one of the bays. Sam informed the airman in charge she would be returning to load the equipment up soon and they left it under his care.
They traveled back to Sam’s lab where the next stage of the plan would occur; Grace would now ’stay’ in her lab while Sam left to go find an ‘airman’ to help her load the equipment.
“Okay…I have to ask…how are you going to get out of here without them seeing you?” she asked Grace.
“Like this,” replied Grace as she began removing her clothing, soon she stood before Sam completely nude.
“Umm…I think they would definitely notice you like that,” Sam remarked as she stared at the replicator’s nude form not being able to resist noticing Grace even had her same pattern of freckles.
Grace walked over to the wall; standing against it, she adjusted her skin tone until she blended in with it. “Wow…instant camouflage; neat trick,” Sam said.
Grace smiled widely, the flash of her teeth standing out in stark relief from the grey of the wall, “Thank you…when you exit I shall follow along the wall until I can assume the form of an airmen, thus keeping my location as far as they will know in this lab,” she told Sam.
“Alright then, let’s go,” Sam said rubbing her hands together.
Sam exited the lab, holding the door open long enough for Grace to slip out. If Sam had not been watching her move she never would have noticed the replicator as she blended in with the wall, her coloring changing to match the environment. Sam shook her head and then closed the door, walking towards the elevator. Once she reached a shadowed alcove that she knew had a blind spot from the cameras, Sam glanced up and down the hall, seeing no one she gave Grace the all clear to change form. Sam watched as the replicator stepped away from the wall shimmering into the form of a young airman. Together they walked to the elevator to go get Janet’s van and drive down to the loading dock.
The pair received no opposition as the left the base and ventured out into the parking lot, after all who was going to question a Colonel followed around by a puppy-faced Corporal. Sam drove the van to the service elevator and the traveled down to the loading area, once there she waved to the airman from before letting him know they were moving the equipment. He just waved back and she and Grace began transferring items from the pallet to the van; of course, him not knowing several of the pieces the replicator picked up weighed over a hundred pounds was probably good, since that would have made someone suspicious.
Once finished moving the items Sam and Grace climbed back in the van, driving back to the elevator to travel to the surface. When they exited, Sam drove straight for the base gate; upon clearing the guards stationed there, she sighed in relief. It worked…they were now on the way to her house to begin building another replicator. Sam glanced over at Grace who was looking out the window at the passing scenery in fascination.
“Well Igor…are you ready to create a new life?” Sam asked trying to contain a laugh when Grace tilted her head and gave her a confused look; even in another’s form the replicator’s mannerisms shown through.
After a few moments Grace smiled at her, “Ah…Igor…the assistant to Dr. Frankenstein, you like the old version of the movie better,” she said after accessing Sam’s memories, “Yes Doctor…let us create new life.”
Sam could not help it, she burst out laughing and Grace joined her; both laughing loudly as they drove down the road on their way to Sam’s home.
