Walking down the corridor, trailed by the two guards, Janet and the replicator were drawing bewildered stares from the personnel they passed. Janet knew that the injury to Sam was old news by now, nothing moved faster on the base than gossip. The fact that the doctor traveled with the one responsible for said injury instead of it being locked up was what caused most of the looks she assumed.

The replicator tried not to stare back at most of the people; she would simply nod her head and smile as they walked passed. Soon they reached the infirmary; upon entering, Janet immediately went to Sam’s bedside, followed by the replicator who took up position at the foot of the bed. The doctor checked various readouts on the machines hooked to her partner, seeing that Sam’s EEG readings were spiking occasionally. This was a good sign, an hour had passed since completion of the surgery and she should be waking soon according to these readings.

Janet’s head nurse, Lt. Beth Sanders, came to stand beside her, “Everything’s normal Doctor, but I was just about to page you. I thought you would be interested in the EEG readings,“ the lieutenant said.

“Yes, she should wake up any time now,” Janet commented, “keep a close watch on her; she’ll probably try to move, don’t let that happen Beth.”

Beth nodded, “Yes m’am,” she answered then walked away.

Turning back to the unconscious woman, Janet brushed Sam’s bangs away from her closed eyes and sighed loudly.

The replicator watched as the petite doctor gazed at her partner with a worried look. She wished that injuring Sam was not necessary but she knew of no other way they would have allowed her to travel here. Seeing the worry it caused the doctor was also not part of her plan. Perhaps when it was certain Sam would make a full recovery she could approach the doctor with her new idea. Clearing her throat to attract the attention of the doctor, she waited until Janet turned towards her before speaking.

“Will Sam awaken soon?” she asked.

“Yes…she should be waking up shortly at least according to the readings we’re getting,” Janet informed the double.

“That is good…I am hoping she will forgive me for causing her harm,” the replicator said as she ducked her head avoiding the doctor’s gaze.

For a moment Janet could have sworn that it was actually Sam standing at the end of the bed not laying in it; the way the double sounded and acted was so like that of her partner when she was apologizing for something it was eerie. Janet walked over to stand next to the double, reaching out she took hold of the replicators chin pulling her head up until their eyes met.

“You’ve already apologized several times and Sam did tell Teal’c before passing out that she believed you didn’t mean to hurt her; I’m sure she will forgive you when she wakes, “ Janet told the double.

The replicator nodded, allowing her chin to rest fully in Janet’s hand she smiled at the doctor. She was beginning to understand why Sam Carter loved this woman and it was making her want that same love so very much.

Just then, Teal’c entered the infirmary and walked over to the pair. Janet let her hand fall away from the double as he walked up.

“Dr Fraiser…General O’Neill would like to speak with you, if you are not busy,” he informed her.

“Okay Teal’c…Sam should be waking soon but they can call me when that happens. What about our guest?” she asked the Jaffa.

“I am to escort her to a holding cell until the general decides what will be done with her,” he stated.

The replicator spoke up quickly, “May I stay here and await Sam’s return to consciousness?” She asked this focusing on the doctor with what she hoped was a pleading look.

“I don’t see why that would be a problem, after all, you’ve behaved so far,” Janet told her giving her a small grin. Turning to Teal’c the doctor asked, “Teal’c would it be alright for her to stay here until Sam wakes?”

The large man pondered the question for a moment then answered, “I believe I should follow the general’s orders but I see no harm in carrying them out here as long as she continues to honor her agreement to behave, as you put it.”

He gave the replicator a look that warned if she didn’t behave, something would definitely be done about it. Janet watched as the two tried to stare each other down, sighing she took the double by the arm leading her over to a stool beside the bed.

“Now…you just stay right here and keep an eye on Sam,” Janet told the replicator, “and you can grab another stool and keep her company Teal’c.”

She told him this in her ‘don’t argue with me voice’. When he bowed his head in agreement, she nodded then walked past him leaving the infirmary to see what the general wanted to speak to her about.

Janet rode the elevator down the levels to Jack’s office; the entire time trying to think what she would say to him. She was certain Teal’c informed him of her little stunt of taking the replicator under wing. He would not be happy about that she was sure about it. Something about the double made her want to pity her, not the fact she looked and acted so much like her partner. The double seemed sincere in her remarks about wanting to be more human; surely, they could help her find some way to do this. As the elevator stopped and its doors opened Janet took a deep breath, steeling herself for the argument she was surely about to have with her friend and commanding officer.

Reaching the open door of his office, she saw Jack fussing with some paperwork, smiling at his grumbles she knocked on the doorjamb, entering when he looked up.

“Doc…how’s Carter doing?” was the first thing he asked.

“She’s fine, should be waking up soon; so what did you want to speak to me about? I should be in the infirmary when she wakes,” crossing her arms she waited for him to speak.

“Teal’c told me what happened at the Alpha site. He said the replicator worked with Carter to fix the disruptor. In fact, they made it work perfectly. When Fifth’s ship appeared they fired the weapon and destroyed it,” he told her with a satisfied look on his face, “but he also told me what you did; have you lost your mind?”

“No…why?” she asked innocently.

“That thing should be locked up until we figure out a way to destroy it,” he said, his voice growing loud in anger, “in fact that’s were it is right now…locked up.”

Janet took a deep breath, “Actually…no she’s not.”

Jack jumped up from his chair, walking around to stand in front of the doctor, “What! I told Teal’c to take it to a holding cell!”

“And I told him she could stay in the infirmary to wait for Sam to wake up; she wants to apologize,” she informed him, “so he’s there watching her.”

Jack just gave her a shocked look; walking past her, he closed the door. Not wanting the next words he spoke to overheard; he was thankful that Carter disabled the monitoring equipment in his office for times just like this.

“Janet you of all people should not want that thing near Sam again,” he sighed running a hand over his face.

Janet knew since he closed the door this was her friend speaking now not the commanding officer. She looked at him trying to think of an answer to the statement he just made.

“Yes Jack…I should be angry with the replicator but she’s apologized profusely to me and it seemed sincere. She has also expressed much concern over Sam, wondering if she will be forgiven by her,” remarked Janet.

She held up a hand stopping him before he could speak, “She also wishes she could be human. Does that sound like something a machine would do?” she stated quirking an eyebrow at him as she waited for his answer.

Jack sighed, he hated when she got like this, “Janet are you sure you’re not just going easy on it cause it looks like Sam? Come on you‘re even referring to it as she.”

“I’m sure…that is not Sam. However, she does have Sam’s memories and feelings; I pity her Jack. If Sam trusted her enough to work with her on the disruptor why can’t we give her the benefit of the doubt or at least wait until Sam wakes up and we find out what really happened between them. I’m sure Teal’c saw enough but you never can tell,” Janet answered her friend.

Before Jack could reply to her statement, the phone rang. He walked over to the desk and answered it. After a moment, he placed the receiver down.

“Sam’s waking up; go be with her,” he said; “But this conversation isn’t over,” he called out as she rushed to open the door.

Opening the door Janet stopped, turning to face him. “We’ll see what Sam has to say,” he said. Janet gave him a nod then left to hurry back to the infirmary and her partner.

Jack walked around to his chair, sitting down he leant back staring at the ceiling. No matter what Sam said about the whole incident, they had some decisions to make about the replicator and he just hoped they made the right ones.
