Inserting the key card into the slot Sam pushed open the door to her hotel room. She adjusted the strap of her laptop bag on her shoulder and then picked up her suitcase, entering the darkened room. Letting the door click shut behind her she made her way across the room by the faint light from the window and tossed the heavy suitcase on the bed. Walking alongside the bed she placed her key card on the small table and switched on the lamp attached to the wall above it. Letting the laptop case slide from her shoulder and land on the bed she began to sit on the edge of the mattress when a voice stopped her in mid motion.

“Lt Colonel Samantha Carter, I presume,” the cultured feminine voice said.

Sam whirled around in mid crouch and then stood up straight. Seated in an armchair on the other side of the room was a woman clad in black. A familiar looking woman actually, Sam thought as she stared at the chair‘s occupant. “How do you know my name?” she asked and then held up a hand stopping the woman’s response. “Wait…I have an even better question. Who are you and how did you get into my room?”

The woman stood and smoothed the material of her skirt with one hand as the other delved into the pocket of the long trench coat she wore. When the hand withdrew from the coat’s black depths Sam saw that it held a business card

“I have kept a close eye on your country’s Stargate program for many years now, Colonel,” the woman said as she took a step forward, holding the card out to the blonde. Sam‘s eyes narrowed at the mention of the Stargate but she kept silent. “Due to your scheduled appearance at this conference, I thought now would be an excellent time to approach you as I find myself in need of your assistance with a small matter,” the woman continued and smiled as Sam took the card from her hand.

The blonde woman held the card close to the lamp and read it aloud, “Sanctuary for All…Dr. Helen Magnus. Well this tells me who you are but it doesn’t explain why you’re here,” Sam said in a suspicious tone. “What is it you need my help with, Doctor.”

“May I?” Helen asked motioning towards the bed.

Sam moved the suitcase out of the way and the dark clad woman stepped forward then sat on the edge of the bed, crossing her legs at the ankles. “Please, don’t let me keep you from refreshing yourself. I know your flight was long and turbulent,” Helen said motioning to the luggage. “I can explain while you unpack.”

Sam gave her an odd look but began unzipping her suitcase. “You know me, the Stargate and the weather conditions at forty thousand feet in the air,“ the blonde mumbled as she pulled out a change of clothes.

Helen peered into the suitcase and a small grin appeared on her face. “What lovely slippers. Are they comfortable?” she asked raising an eyebrow at the blonde.

Sam picked up the fluffy footwear and remarked, ”They were a gift and yes, they are; can we get to the reason you’re here?”

“Absolutely,” Helen said and resting her weight on one arm leaned back some to begin telling Sam what she did and why she sought her out.

Sam motioned for the woman to continue with the explanation as she slipped into the bathroom to change. Keeping the door open enough to hear the doctor’s elegant British accent she quickly put on a pair of sweats and a t-shirt, tossing the pants suit she had worn on the flight in one corner of the bathroom. She wet a bath cloth and was wiping her face while listening as the doctor explained her work, but when the woman mentioned the Goa’uld Sam pulled the door open and stood in the doorway of the bathroom with a confused look on her face. “They aren’t supposed to be on this planet. It’s against the treaty with the Asgard,” she said in an annoyed tone.

“Ah, yes, the Asgard. Small, grey humanoids with large black eyes; the focus of many UFO enthusiasts world wide,” Helen remarked which earned another confused look from Sam.

“How in the world do you know all of this Dr. Magnus?” Sam asked repeating herself from earlier.

“I have my sources, Colonel Carter; many of whom would like to stay anonymous,” Helen replied.

Sam walked back over to the bed and took a seat. “Fine, be cryptic then. I’m guessing you have a Goa’uld masquerading as something else and you need my help to stop them. Correct?” she asked.

“Why, yes; one claiming to be an ancient goddess with the power to heal has formed a small cult in a poverty stricken area of the city,” Helen said.

“So, she’s healing people, doesn’t sound so bad,” Sam said with a shrug of her shoulders. “Even if she is Goa’uld at least she’s helping not harming.”

“But she is condoning theft and general mischief making from her followers. So much that the police have taken to rounding up the poor souls even if they have no connection to the cult,” Helen continued.

Sam sighed and ran a hand through her hair. She looked at the woman seated on the bed across from her and spoke, “Fine, I’ll help you but I’m scheduled to speak in the morning. Will tomorrow afternoon be soon enough for you,” she told Helen.

Rising from the bed Helen nodded her head and answered, “That would be an excellent time, Colonel. I’ll have my manservant pick you up at the hotel’s entrance at two sharp.”

“Okay, and since I’m going to be working with you, please, call me Sam,” the blonde said in reply.

Helen held out her hand and Sam gripped it firmly then shook it as the doctor remarked, “I shall see you on the morrow then, Sam.”

Sam gave her an odd look at the out-dated remark but didn’t say anything as the dark clad woman excused herself and walked towards the door. Opening it she gave the blonde a smile and a small wave then exited. Sam flopped back on the bed and stared up at the ceiling. “What have I gotten myself into now?” she muttered.
