The blue SUV traveled along the shaded country road and inside the driver sighed a breath of relief; a long week of work was complete and now she could relax at home with her girlfriend for the weekend before starting all over again. Leaving the city far behind she powered the windows down, letting in the fresh air. There was just the hint of rain in the wind blowing through the vehicle and she smiled. Rain meant staying cooped up inside, on the couch with Tara as they watched movies.
“Although if it does rain then that means wet dogs,” Jo said to herself. “On second thought, please don’t let it rain this weekend.”
Nearing the lane which led to the home shared with the younger woman, Jo mused, “Well, maybe it will stay cool and we can work on that front flowerbed. Sina and Duke can help dig holes for new plants.” She chuckled at the thought.
Making a right turn she drove towards the house, growing closer she saw Tara’s car along with two others parked in the driveway. “Oh, that’s right…Auntie M was supposed to come over today to help Tara get ready for that bake sale at the church this weekend. They must have wrangled somebody else into helping them; I wonder who, though, never seen that car around before.”
Forgoing parking in the drive, Jo pulled the SUV up under the tree in the front yard. Exiting, she gathered her gear from the back seat and walked towards the front porch. No sooner had she set a foot on the first step then the door opened and two blurs sped out, one yellow and…one brown, which swarmed its way up her tall frame.
Dropping her duffle bag and camera case, she tried to latch onto the wriggling creature. “What tha? Chion! How in the world did you get here?” she exclaimed as she succeeded, holding up the small brown and black striped creature who stopped wriggling and waved.
“Hi, Jo!” the animal said in a high pitched voice.
“Surprise!” A voice said from the doorway and Jo looked past the creature in her arms to see a figure she hadn’t seen since their trip to the States at Christmas time.
“Sam? I mean, Colonel Carter? Would somebody please tell me what’s going on?” she said in a confused voice.
“Put me down, please,” Chion said and Jo set the small animal down. She looked over at the other animal on the porch who was trying to move both of her bags into the house. “Sina…did you know about this?” she gave the blonde creature a questioning look as she picked up the heavier duffle but let Sina carry the camera case.
“Maybe,” the animal replied, blinking her eyes and wriggling her nose before she then disappeared past Sam into the house with Chion close behind.
“Did they talk you into this?” Jo asked Sam as she entered the house.
“No, it just kind of all fell together. Come on and get settled. We’ll explain,” the blonde officer told her.
“We?” Jo asked and stopped in the foyer, there in the kitchen was Sam’s other half, helping Tara and Auntie M with their baking duties. “Janet’s here, too?” she asked in a stunned voice. “Do you two need a place to stay?” was all she could think to ask at the moment, still confused by the presence of the two woman in her house.
Sam chuckled. “No, but thanks for the offer, we have a hotel room booked in Kiel. Now go get changed and then we’ll explain,” she told the surprised younger officer giving her a slight push to get her moving.
With a stumbled step, Jo moved further into the house and past the kitchen where the three women worked to make baked goods. She caught Tara’s eye and mouthed, “What is going on?”
Tara just laughed and motioned for her to go change out of her uniform. Shaking her head, Jo walked down the hallway to their bedroom where she found Sina and Chion sitting on their bed, along with the dogs and the cats. “A little privacy, if you don’t mind,” she told them, shooing the animals out of the room. She stopped the two capable of talking at the door. “I don’t know how you did it, but it’s nice to have you at home, Chion. We missed you,” she said bending down and ruffling the little creature’s fur.
“I missed all of you, too. Come on, Sina, lets go see if we can sneak some cookies.” With that said, the two scampered out of the bedroom, leaving Jo to change.
After a quick shower the young officer changed into some shorts and a t-shirt. As she toweled her hair dry, she could hear voices coming from the bedroom, not human voices but those of Sina and Chion. Moving closer to the bathroom door she placed an ear against it and could hear a few muffled words; gate…vest…explorer and then the voices grew more muffled as the two creatures dropped their tones lower. Stepping away, she gave the door a puzzled look and turned back to finish drying her hair. Soon finished with the task, she walked out to find Sina and Chion still on the bed. Each held a large cookie and between bites they would talk a little more, catching up on each other’s lives.
“Hey, I have to sleep in that bed,” Jo muttered as she moved across the room.
“We’ll get the crumbs up, “ Chion told her.
“And what we miss the dogs will clean up.” Sina added, mumbling over a mouthful of cookie.
Jo threw her hands up in the air. “It’s back to normal already,” she grumbled as she walked out of the bedroom and back towards the kitchen. Halfway there, she heard a loud voice exclaim, “Samantha Carter, put down that cookie! You’ve had five already!”
“Get her, Auntie M,” Jo chuckled to herself as she entered the living room to see Sam sitting on a stool at the bar arms crossed and a pout on her face. Walking up beside her, she nudged the older officer with her elbow, “Problems, Colonel?”
“I don’t like your aunt,“ grumbled Sam.
“I do,” Janet spoke up from where she leaned against the counter with a crooked grin on her face. “I’ve been helping Tara ready the trays, if it hadn’t been for her guarding the finished cookies Sam, and the critters would have snuck off with all of them by now.”
“I swear they are bottomless pits. Sina and Chion made off with a tray already
when I turned my back for just a minute,“ Auntie M remarked. “And this one was working on another one on her own, “ she said, shaking a finger at the blonde woman.
“May I have a cookie, please,” Jo asked in a sweet tone.
Tara walked around the bar and picked up a cookie from the countertop where they cooled. She came to stand before her girlfriend, who gave her a little smile and leaned forward to give her a quick kiss. This earned her a groan from Sam, who muttered, “Grovel much?”
Jo accepted the cookie held out to her and, taking a bite, looked at Sam. “It got me a cookie, didn’t it?”
Perking up, Sam grinned. “Oh, Janet,” she said in a sing-song voice.
“You‘ve had enough, Sam,” the doctor replied from her resting spot.
“Darn it,” grumbled the blonde.
This made the other four women burst out laughing. Once the laughs trickled off, they quickly made work of pulling the last of the cookie sheets from the oven and placing them on the counter to cool down. While the cookies cooled, they moved to the living room where Jo and Tara looked at the two women from Colorado. “Now, could you please tell us what is going on?”
Sam took a deep breath to begin the tale but Janet beat her to the explanation; the doctor gave her partner a smile as she explained why they were in Germany.
“I was invited to speak at a medical conference in Kiel, the main topic being infectious diseases, since that is my specialty. So I thought since we were in the area, we could drop in on the two of you to visit for a little while,” Janet told the couple.
Sam interrupted her, “And I was at the air base in Colorado getting my plane ready for the trip when I bumped into an old friend.”
Just then Sina and Chion waltzed into the room and climbed up to sit in Jo and Tara’s laps. “That one,” Sam said, pointing to Chion. “She practically climbed up my body as I was checking the Piper’s engine over.”
“I was just excited to see her,“ Chion said. “And I told her I had a problem and asked if she could help.”
“And the problem was?” Jo asked, motioning for someone to continue.
“It seems that Chion and her handler were scheduled for transfer to Ramstein but Homer came down with the flu and Chion didn’t want to wait,” Sam told them. “So she spotted me as an airman was taking her for a walk and broke away from him. Ran up my body and perched herself on my shoulder, chattering up a storm. Almost gave me a heart attack when she did it, too,” Sam said, giving the small creature a look.
“I apologized,” Chion replied with a little shrug of her furry shoulders and Sam gave her a wink.
“Sam called me and asked if I cared if we had a passenger along for the flight and, after making the necessary arrangements, we left from Colorado early this morning,” Janet added, reaching over from her seat to scratch the animal’s head.
“I ask you again...did you know about this?” Jo asked the blonde animal in her lap.
“Well…I knew she was supposed to come home, just not when,” Sina admitted.
“And you were going to tell us when?” Tara asked.
“We wanted to surprise the two of you,” an unexpected voice chimed in.
Jo and Tara looked over at Auntie M who had a big smile on her face; “You knew about this, too?” Tara asked.
“Chion called me before they left this morning,” she admitted.
“On my phone,” Janet supplied.
Everyone laughed at the doctor’s tone. She and Sam, with occasional input from Chion, continued the story of the plane trip. And so the five women and two talking animals spent the rest of the evening getting to know more about each other.
