Random pieces of clothing flew across the room, some landing on the bed and others hitting the floor. From inside the closet there came several muttered curses and Sam backed away from the enclosed space until she bumped into the bed then with a heavy sigh she fell back, landing on top of the clothes she’d strewn over it.

She picked up a shirt lying beside her, holding it up she cursed again and tossed it on the floor, “This should not be hard to do,” she grumbled.

Staring up at the ceiling she ran the events from earlier in the day through her mind, ‘That is one sneaky kid,’ she thought, ‘there’s no way I would have asked Janet out on a date on my own.’

After finishing with the yard work, the two women decided on the time Sam would come back to pick the doctor up for their night at the theatre and then dinner. Nothing else was said between them about the real reason they’d been set-up, it was like they both realized this was the starting point for something bigger but neither wanted to ruin it with trying to talk things over first; the simple admission that they both were having the same feelings towards each other seemed to be enough for the moment.

“This is so not going to happen if I don’t get off my ass and decide what to wear,” Sam grumbled as she glanced over at the clock, “I still have a couple of hours to get ready though.” With a frustrated growl she sat up on the bed then stood and began going through the clothing once again.

************************

Little did Sam know the same thing was occurring at Janet’s house, although the doctor’s thoughts were more on trying to make a good impression on the blonde Air Force captain more than anything.

“Dammit…I know I have something suitable to wear in all this mess,” Janet growled out as she stared at the pile of clothing on her bed.

Picking up a dress she sighed and tossed it off to the side, “That one is to sexy…I don’t want her to think I’m just after one thing, although making her drool would be fun,” she said with a smirk as she sorted through the outfits.

“I need something simple yet elegant…maybe show off a little skin but not enough that makes me look like a tramp,” Janet muttered.

“Hey Mom…what are you doing?” Cassie said as she appeared in the bedroom doorway.

“Trying to decide on what to wear tonight for this little date you set-up between Sam and I you sneaky child,” Janet told her with a grin and shake of her finger towards her daughter.

“So you’re not mad at me for doing it?” Cassie asked as she walked in and sat on the bed.

“No sweetheart I’m not mad, actually I’m happy you did this; it was about time we made a move in this direction, I guess it just took a little push from the outside to get us to going,” Janet said, ruffling Cassie’s hair.

“Good, because I was getting tired of it too, sometimes adults can be so dense,” Cassie told her mother.

Janet raised an eyebrow at this comment, ”Oh really…dense huh? I’ll show you dense,” and she moved forward quickly, to begin tickling her daughter.

After a few minutes of horseplay Cassie called truce and Janet stood up, “Okay…back to looking for something to wear.”

Cassie picked up a dress from the pile, “Wear this one Mom, its pretty and I think Sam will like it.”

Taking the green dress from her daughter’s hands, Janet held it up before her, “Really?”

Cassie nodded her head, “Yep.”

“Okay then…you go get your things together to take with you to Jack’s, he’s supposed to pick you up before Sam gets here and I’ll finish getting ready,” Janet told the girl.

Jumping up from the bed Cassie gave her mother a hug, “Don’t worry Mom, she likes you no matter what you wear,” she said looking up at Janet.

“How’d you get so smart?” Janet asked hugging her back.

“I have good role models, “ Cassie replied and released her hold on Janet then left to get her things together.

Janet smiled and shook her head at Cassie’s remark then with a happy sigh walked to the bathroom to get cleaned up for her night out with Sam.

Standing in front of her closet mirror Sam smoothed the blue silk down over the collar of the waist length black jacket she wore, she tugged on the cuffs until just the right amount showed from her sleeves and with a final look over her appearance reached down to pull on her dress boots. Stomping her feet to settle them she turned away from the closet and glanced at the clock, there was still enough time for her to make a stop before she picked Janet up. Walking out of her bedroom she made her way to the front door, grabbed her keys from the side table and walked out the door with a jaunty little swing to her steps.

Twenty minutes and one stop later she found herself standing on the front porch of the doctor’s house, her finger paused before the doorbell; taking a deep breath to calm her nerves down some she pressed the button, after a couple of minutes the door swung open and Sam muttered softly, ”Holy Hannah.”

Janet stood in the open doorway in a pale green dress, the thin straps showing off her tanned shoulders, its length stopped just above her knees and Sam couldn’t help but notice the slight v-shaped front showed off just a hint of cleavage. “I guess by that reaction you like my dress,” Janet said with a smile.

Swallowing the frog in her throat Sam replied, “Uh…yeah, you look beautiful; umm…these are for you,” she added and pulled a bouquet of flowers from behind her back, holding them out to Janet. “I know it’s cheesy but I just thought since you like flowers so much it was appropriate,” Sam said in a rush of words.

Trying not to chuckle at the nervous woman standing before her, Janet accepted the flowers, “They’re lovely Sam…thank you; let me put them in some water and grab my wrap then we can leave,” she said motioning for Sam to come in.

Sam entered the house and Janet closed the door, moving past the blonde she carried the flowers into the kitchen. Standing in the foyer Sam began nervously twiddling her thumbs, when she realized what she was doing she quickly stuck her hands behind her back, locking her fingers together; rocking back on her heels she spoke in a loud voice, “So…did Cass already go over to Jack’s?”

“Yes, he picked her up about ten minutes before you showed up and he dropped off the tickets too,” Janet replied as she walked back into the living room, placing the vase of flowers on the mantle she picked up her wrap from the chair and placed it on her shoulders.

“Ready to go?” she asked, walking up to Sam.

Sam nodded in reply and smiling at the doctor she moved to open the door for her. They walked out of the house and after Janet made sure the front door was locked made their way to Sam’s car; where Sam once again opened the door for her, after Janet was seated she moved around to the driver’s side and climbed in then cranked the car, pulling out of the driveway they were on their way to the theatre.

***********************

After a few minutes of awkward silence Sam spoke up, “So did you say anything to Jack when he came to pick up Cassie?”

Janet smiled as she remembered the conversation she’d had with the Colonel, “Actually yes…I told him I didn’t realize he was such a romantic at heart.”

“What did he have to say about that?” Sam asked.

“He just told me that Cassie asked him and Daniel to give her a helping hand and that she wanted both of us to be happy,” Janet told the blonde, “ and then he grinned at me and said it was about time we got together because he was tired of the mushy looks you kept throwing my way whenever I was around the team.”

A blush flashed across Sam’s cheeks as she ducked her head and muttered, “Dammit…I didn’t think I was being that obvious.”

“Sam even I noticed them…I just wasn’t sure if you wanted to go any further than friendship with our relationship,” the doctor told her, rubbing the still blushing woman’s shoulder with her hand.

Clearing her throat, Sam replied, “I wasn’t sure you wanted to…I mean you were married at one time.”

“Yes…I was but let’s not talk about that, it’s in the past; I’d rather focus on the present and possibly the future,” Janet said softly as she leaned back in her seat and stared out the window.

Not meaning to upset the doctor, Sam quickly changed the subject, ‘”So what are we going to see?”

Turning her head back to look at Sam, the doctor replied, “My Fair Lady.”

“Really?” Sam asked her voice raised several octaves and her face lit up when she looked at the woman seated next to her, which made Janet laugh; “I guess by that reaction you’ve seen it?” she said.

Sam gave her a wide smile, “The movie yes…on stage no; it was my mother’s favorite play actually,” she told Janet.

“Then this will be a special treat for you,” Janet replied with a smile as she watched Sam nod happily.

The couple continued to make small talk until they reached the theatre; after Sam parked she got out of the car and walked round, opening the door for the doctor then when Janet stood up she held out her arm for the doctor to take. Walking arm in arm they made their way into the large building for the first half of their date.

*********************

Several hours later after a much enjoyed time during the play the two exited the theatre to discover a light rain falling.

“Wait here and I’ll get the car,” Sam told the doctor as she ran out into the drizzle towards the parking area.

Janet watched her dash away and smiled; it had been a very interesting time in the theatre, Sam’s enthusiasm was barely contained as they watched the play. Several times during the musical portions Janet heard her singing along softly then in the moments of speaking she seemed to be following the dialog perfectly and although she spoke under her breath, Janet still heard every word. At some point during the play Sam’s hand found her own and they stayed that way, joined together for the rest of the performance until finally having to let loose their grip on each other as Sam dashed out into the rain for the car. Pulling her wrap a little tighter Janet couldn’t wipe the smile from her face, even though the rain was beginning to fall down heavier it couldn’t dampen her mood.

Sam drove the car as close to the building as she could then reaching under the seat pulled out an umbrella, opening her door she popped the shield open over her head and moved quickly towards Janet who waited under the buildings’ portico. Jumping over a puddle she soon stood beside the doctor, “Whoa…it’s really starting to pour; sorry but I couldn’t get any closer to the building,” she said to Janet.

“It’s fine…it’s just water Sam…I won’t melt,” Janet said looking at the taller woman and smiling.

Sam blushed and ducked her head which made Janet reach out a hand to grasp the blushing woman’s chin and pull it up, “Why do you do that?”

“Blush? I don’t know you seem to do that to me a lot,” Sam said softly.

“No…hide your face; you’re beautiful when you blush Samantha,” Janet stated and grinned at her as she let her hand drop.

This only made Sam’s face grow redder as the blush deepened and she cleared her throat, “Umm…if you say so, I always thought it made me look stupid.”

Janet laughed, “You stupid…never.”

Sam smiled at the comment and holding up the umbrella she motioned towards the car, “Your chariot awaits madam doctor,” she said.

Janet laughed softly and moving closer to Sam under the umbrella they ran out in the downpour to the car where Sam got the door open then Janet climbed quickly into the seat, trying not to let too much water enter with her. Sam ran around to the driver’s side and opening the door, jumped into the seat, shaking the umbrella she closed it then tossed it into the backseat.

Running a hand through her damp hair Sam laughed, “You know there was nothing said about rain in the forecast for tonight,” she said looking at Janet.

“Well you can never tell with mountain weather…at least it’s not cold rain,” Janet commented.

“True…but it’s still wet and now we both are too,” Sam remarked and then she blushed, “Umm…there was a double meaning in there and I didn’t mean it.”

This made Janet laugh again, “It’s okay Sam…I know what you meant,” she told the blonde as she reached a hand up to brush a strand of wet hair away from bright blue eyes; “I could get lost in your eyes,” Janet murmured softly as she let her fingers stroke Sam’s cheek.

“I could kiss you right now but I really don’t want the first time I do that to be in my car,” Sam replied in a soft voice.

“I understand,” Janet told her and then she smiled, “I have an idea.”

“Really…do tell,” Sam said.

“Since we’re both a little on the damp side now…why don’t we just skip the restaurant and go back to my house? We can get out of these wet clothes and I can fix us something to eat,” Janet said giving the woman next to her a questioning look.

Sam’s face scrunched up in thought and then with a smile she replied, “That sounds like a good idea, I’d much rather spend time with you in a comfortable environment then in a restaurant.”

“Well then…to my house it is,” Janet told her returning the smile.

“Yes ma’am,” Sam replied and started up the car, pulling away from the theatre they were on their way back to the doctor’s house.

******************************

The sound of laughter could be heard coming through the front door as it opened and the women walked into Janet’s home. Sam shook her wet head, playfully splattering the doctor with water droplets, “Maybe we should have used the umbrella running to the front porch,” she said grinning.

“I think the mad dash was fun,” Janet replied as she smoothed back her wet hair, “besides we plan on changing anyway.”

“Good point…I did leave some clothes over here didn’t I?” Sam asked.

“Yes…they’re upstairs in my room…come on,” Janet replied and walked past the taller woman towards the stairs.

“Umm…you can just bring them back down and I’ll change in the bathroom down here,” Sam told her.

Janet stopped in mid-step, she turned back to face Sam, “You can change in the bedroom while I use the bathroom to change…no arguments,” the doctor said and then continued up the stairs.

Sighing loudly Sam followed her but paused in mid-step when she heard Janet mutter, “It’s not like I haven’t seen you without clothes before.”

‘She has a point there,’ Sam thought, ‘but this is different.’ With a small shake of her head she continued up the stairs, not far behind the doctor.

“Please ignore the mess,” Janet said as they walked into her bedroom.

Sam saw the scattered clothing on the bed and grinned, “Oh you should see mine…looks like a tornado hit my closet actually,” she remarked as Janet walked over to the dresser and pulled open a drawer.

The doctor took out a few items and turned to hand them to Sam, “Here you go.”

Sam gave her a confused look, “I have a drawer?”

“Of course…you do stay here a lot in case you haven’t noticed,” Janet replied with a grin.

“I didn’t realize it was enough to warrant my own drawer though,” Sam said as she moved closer to the doctor and took the clothing from Janet’s hands; their fingers brushed and both stood looking at each other for a few moments.

“Why does this seem so awkward?” Janet asked in a soft voice.

“I don’t know…it shouldn’t…should it?” Sam replied in the same soft tone.

“No…it shouldn’t,” Janet said and then clearing her throat turned away to gather her own clothing to change.

Pulling her jacket off Sam laid it on the bed and then sat down to tug her boots off; “I’ll let you know before I come out,” Janet told her as she walked into the bathroom, closing the door behind her only to open it again and toss Sam a towel.

Sam caught the towel and then sat on the bed staring at the closed door, ‘Was this a good idea? Maybe we should have gone to eat at the restaurant…oh shut up you big baby…you know you wouldn’t have said a word if you’d gone there…now change clothes,’ she admonished herself and stood up to begin unbuttoning her shirt.

In the bathroom Janet unzipped the wet dress and let it fall to puddle on the floor around her feet, she stared at her reflection in the mirror, “I look like wet rat,” she muttered and grabbed a towel to dry her hair some.

As she toweled her hair, thoughts ran wild through her head, ‘Okay…why did you suggest this?…because Sam seems to be more comfortable here that’s why…and you are too. But where will this lead to? Just us talking and spending some time together or do you want it to go further?…no…we just admitted to our feelings…don’t need to rush things you idiot.’

Sighing she pulled on the pair of sweatpants and tugged the t-shirt over her head, running a hand through her still damp hair she stared in the mirror again, ”Well she’s seen you looking worse…don’t worry about it,” she said to her reflection.

Walking over to the door she cracked it open, “Are you decent?” she called out.

“Yes,” was the reply and she opened the door to find Sam sitting cross-legged on the bed in an old sweatshirt and worn jeans, her bare feet tucked under her.

“Alright then…let’s go fix something to eat…I’m starving,” Janet said as she walked up to Sam and held out her hand.

Sam took it and let the smaller woman pull her up from the bed, “Me too and you have to let me help,” she told the doctor as Janet led her from the bedroom.

“I thought you didn’t cook?” Janet asked as they walked back downstairs.

“I can cook…some stuff…it’s just easier to order or pop something into the microwave,” Sam admitted as they walked into the kitchen.

“Well then...how are you with eggs?” Janet asked as she moved to open the fridge.

“Great actually…if you have all the fixings I can make us omelets,” Sam replied proudly.

Janet motioned towards the open fridge, ”Be my guest…you make those and I’ll work on the bacon…that is if breakfast for dinner is okay with you,” she added.

“Sounds perfect,” Sam replied moving to rummage through the fridge.

The two women worked in comfortable silence to prepare the meal although they took every opportunity to bump into one another or let their hands touch. They may have not been talking but shy looks and smiles given to each other spoke enough for them both as they worked together. Soon they finished and were seated at the island bar, eating their food.

Janet took a bite of her omelet, “Mm…this is good Sam,” she said after savoring the bite.

“Thank you,” Sam replied giving Janet a smile as she ate her food.

They continued with the meal, making small talk about their pasts but Janet always skirted the subject of her former marriage so Sam finally stopped asking, moving the subject to their families and then work related things. After several funny stories Janet had never heard about the team’s exploits they finally finished their food and Janet moved to clear away the plates. Sam tried to help but the doctor stopped her, ”No…I’ll clean up, you go pick out a movie for us to watch while I do this.”

“Alright…if you insist,” Sam told her.

“I do…now scoot,” Janet said making a shooing motion with her hands.

Grinning at her Sam moved quickly out of the kitchen to wander into the living room where she walked over to the shelves holding a large collection of movies and CDs; browsing through them she couldn’t decide on what to watch until her eyes traveled over Janet’s music collection and an idea struck her.

Janet finished loading the dishwasher and turned to wipe down the stove when the soft sounds of one of her favorite jazz albums sounded from the living room. Finishing up quickly she wiped her hands clean and walked towards the living room, where she found Sam standing with her back turned, swaying back and forth to the music, in front of the shelves.

“Couldn’t decide on a movie I take it?” Janet asked from across the room.

Whirling around Sam smiled and with a shrug of her shoulders replied, “Nope…but I love this song and it gave me an idea; Would you like to dance with me?” she asked holding out her hands to the doctor.

Janet walked up and placed her hands in Sam’s, “I’d love to.”

Pulling the doctor’s smaller body close to her own, Sam wrapped her arms around her slim waist and they began swaying; letting her head rest on Sam’s shoulder Janet moved with her as they slowly moved to the music.

After several minutes of slow dancing Sam spoke, “You know something?” she asked, her head resting against the top of Janet’s.

Janet raised her head to look up at Sam, “What?”

“I’m glad we skipped going to the restaurant…this is much nicer,” replied Sam in a soft voice, “ and it’s the perfect place for me to do this.”

Sam dipped her head down to place a soft kiss on the doctor’s lips, it was rather chaste for a few seconds and then Janet reached up to cup the back of her head, pulling it down a little more as she returned the kiss. The couple stopped moving as the kiss grew in intensity, each putting all of the words not spoken between them into the gentle melding of tongues and lips; finally Sam broke the kiss, letting her forehead rest on Janet’s and with a smile on her face spoke, “Now that’s a first kiss I’ll remember for the rest of my life.”

Janet blushed this time and with a shy smile replied, “Oh yeah…I will too but I hope to add many more memories of you and me to my list of remembered things.”

“Don’t worry…it’s going to be a long list…I’m not going anywhere,” Sam whispered and bent to capture the doctor’s lips again.

The couple continued the kiss, swaying in each others arms as the soft music played and years later they both would look back on the moment as the best date they had ever had.
