"Oh, god!" said Sam Carter, flinging her arms around her partner, "you came back."
"Ughff. Let me breathe, love," replied the diminutive doctor. "You know I'd move heaven and earth, and a good deal more, to get back to you by now, surely."
Janet walked over to the austere single bed in the corner of the small guest quarters, and flopped carefully onto it.
"So, how long have you been sleeping on the base, again?" she queried.
"Oh, er..." Sam blushed.
Reaching out, Janet took her hand, and guided the flustered woman to her side. She patted the bed and Sam sat, allowing Janet to place her head in what little space remained on her lap. Gently, Janet rolled back Sam's jumper and placed her lips against her partner's distended belly, in a chaste kiss.
"Do you think I would have missed this for the universe, love? Any universe?"
Sam smiled down at her, tangling her fingers in her lover's hair.
"I was so afraid. You know how I hate waiting."
"I know, love. I know."
The sat in companionable silence for a moment or two.
"I met so many versions of you while I was gone. It was... strange."
"Did any of them...? Were any of them...?"
"Only one, I think. The 'local' girl. She seemed so haunted. So very sad. And she avoided me, unlike her Teal'c and Daniel, who were puppylike in their need to spend some time with me."
"Oh?"
"They only gave me the barest of details of, er... how I..."
"Don't say it. Please."
"It's OK, love. I'm here now, and I'm staying."
"I know, but, still... just don't say it."
"OK," she agreed. "You know, I think she made sure we were the last team out. They were all in the gateroom when we got there. Martouf went ahead... you know he how he still carries a torch for you."
"Oh, don't I know it."
"Anyway, he mentioned how you've been missed, and she asked where you were... So, well, I had to tell her."
"How did she take it?"
"She hugs nearly as tightly as you do," laughed Janet, earning herself a gentle smack on the shoulder in reproof. "Ow!"
"Did she ask?"
"There was no time, and we weren't alone, but the question was in her eyes. I just hope I conveyed the right message back."

Sam Carter sat on the bunk she used more than the bed in her house, and cried. Watching the alternate Janet walk through the gate had been one of the hardest things she had done of late. She just hoped she had understood that other Janet correctly. That she was heading home to save her planet... for her lover and their baby.
