The day started with SG-1 gating to a new world to explore more of its resources. There was an extra member along for the duration though; Doctor Janet Frasier joined the team on this trip. Janet had come along to test the plant life for medical uses. Since the initial survey had shown some promising results, she wanted to do a more thorough exploration.
The team split up with O’Neil, Teal’c and Daniel taking one quadrant to look for mineral samples, which left Sam and Janet to explore the forested area for the plant samples. Sam maneuvered the M.A.L.P. carrying the testing supplies along a faint pathway through the trees as Janet followed behind, stopping occasionally to pull a few leaves or take samples of bark from the trees.
Janet walked along looking for different plants and not paying attention to where she was going when she suddenly ran into Sam’s back.
“Ooof…hey what’s the hold-up?” she asked, rubbing her nose where it had connected with Sam’s shoulder.
“Sorry Janet…but I think the M.A.L.P. is stuck.” Sam replied.
“Stuck? You got the M.A.L.P. stuck?” Janet said in amazement.
Walking around her companion, Janet saw that the machine was indeed stuck, whether it was from the huge rut it had fallen into or the two trees it was in between was hard to tell. She stood looking at the machine, hands on her hips she turned back to Sam. “Well we need to unstick it then.”
Sam shook her head, “Sorry…I thought it would make it through the trees; I guess that rut didn’t help. Here, you take the controls and work them while I try to push it on through.” She handed the controls to Janet and then removed her backpack and jacket.
“Do you really think you can push it out of there, Sam; I mean, it’s a heavy piece of machinery,” the doctor said as she watched her partner try to find the best position for leverage against the machine.
“Sure it’s almost through any way; it just needs a little help. When I tell you give the motor a rev,” Sam replied as she settled her shoulder against the metal surface.
“Okay…trying moving it forward…now,” Sam called out, putting her weight behind her push.
Janet revved the motor a bit then tried moving the M.A.L.P. forward, she watched as Sam pushed with all her strength, all that moved were the tires as they spun bits of dirt and debris all over her.
”Stop!” Sam yelled out as she straightened up and began brushing the debris off her face.
“Well that didn’t work,” she said, grinning as Sam walked back to her.
“I thought it would, maybe I need to find a lever, also need to put something under the tires for traction I guess,” sighed Sam.
Reaching up Janet pulled a piece of bark out of Sam’s hair, “Maybe we need to call the guys,” she suggested.
“No…we can get it out, just give me a few minutes,” Sam said as she searched for something to use as a lever, “Find some rocks or something to wedge under the tires okay,” she called out as she disappeared into the trees.
Janet just shook her head mumbling, ”Damn stubborn woman; well at least if she hurts herself I’m here to patch her up.” She ventured off the path and soon returned carrying an armful of sticks and a few large stones. She laid them next to the M.A.L.P. and went back for more; when she returned the second time Sam was back also, carrying thick, sturdy looking limb almost as tall as the doctor was.
“Okay… that looks like enough stuff to wedge under the tires, let’s get that done and try again,” Sam commented as she began moving the first pile under the tires. Soon they had the rut filled in under both back tires and were ready to try again.
With Janet working the controls once more, Sam positioned the tree limb under the back edge of the M.A.L.P., “Okay Janet…now!”
The doctor revved the motor once more and moved the controls forward as Sam pushed using the lever. The tires stopped spinning as they gained some traction on the debris piled under them and the machine began to inch forward slowly, and then stopped as it rolled off the material.
Janet stopped the motor as Sam backed away from the machine, “Well…it moved,” Sam said with a grin, “We just need to get more stuff to pile under it.”
“All right, back to rock and stick hunting then,” Janet remarked to her grinning partner.
Working together the two women soon created a large pile of debris; they then began wedging their finds under the machine, filling in the rut it was sitting in. Sam then took up her position behind it with her lever once more; when she was ready, she called out to Janet, “Okay…hit the motor.”
Janet started up the motor and moved the controls forward again, sure enough the added traction helped, as the M.A.L.P. began to work its way free of the trees. She revved the motor once more and suddenly it popped free from its position. Sam was not expecting the sudden movement and toppled forward into the debris filled rut.
“Sam!” Janet yelled as she ran forward to check on the fallen woman, as she knelt down to turn Sam over she heard laughter coming from her partner.
Sam rolled over and looked up at the kneeling doctor, still giggling she wiped the blood from a small cut over her eye. “I told you we could get it unstuck,” she said with a huge smile.
Janet just laughed at the smiling woman, “Well come on She-Ra, let’s get that cut patched and finish with the mission,” the doctor replied as she helped her still grinning partner up.
