I regret to inform you of the death of Vala the goldfish…she was a pretty little fish…always willing to play…and I refuse to cry over a fish. Therefore, I am writing a sad goldfish tale instead…
Minnie awoke from her nap; swimming out of the big hidey-hole in the rock, she began looking for her friend to play with. She swam around the tank calling for the little black goldfish, “Vala! Vala! Where are you? Come on it’s time to play!”
Minnie checked all the hidey-holes in the rock, swimming around to look behind it as well; she even checked under the big pebbles where they had made a fort to play in…but no Vala.
Terline floated in her corner watching her tank mate look for their smaller companion. She knew what happened to the little black fish; she just wished she did not have to tell Minnie about it.
“Minnie come up here please,” she called out.
Minnie stopped her searching, swimming up to float beside Terline,”Have you seen Vala? I can’t find her anywhere; she’s getting good at hide and seek isn’t she?” she remarked as she floated by the pale goldfish.
“I’m afraid Vala is gone and won’t be coming back Minnie,” Terline said in with a sad tone.
“Gone? What do you mean gone? She was here last night,” commented a confused Minnie.
“Well do you remember what happened to her yesterday?” asked Terline.
“Yeah…she hurt her tailfin but she seemed okay as long as she stayed still,” replied Minnie.
“I think she hurt more than her tailfin Minnie; she went down pretty fast during the night,” Terline sighed, “this morning the human found her floating at the top of the tank.”
“She always floats at the top of the tank; she likes to do that,” said Minnie.
“No Minnie…this time she wasn’t playing…she had stopped breathing. She died Minnie.” Terline said finally.
Minnie was silent for a few moments, “But she was so young…how can she be dead?”
“It was a tragic accident Minnie…but she’s not hurting anymore. She’s in a better place.” Terline told the other fish.
Minnie sighed deeply then swam down to the rock and went into the big hidey-hole; turning around she floated quietly. Terline swam down to float in front of her.
“Are you okay?” she asked.
“Yeah…I’m just gonna miss her…she was fun to play with,” replied Minnie, sighing again.
“Well…tell you what, I’ll start playing with you okay?” said Terline to her sad companion.
“Okay…that would be nice Terline but can we play tomorrow. I just want to float here and remember the fun we had with Vala,” replied Minnie.
“That’s fine Minnie,” Terline told her as she swam into the hole and rested beside the golden fish.
They two tank mates began recalling all the fun times they had shared with the little black fish while she was with them. Today would be a day for remembering and not playing.
