ml_spikie-After having an argument with Janet, Sam is distracted while offworld and gets hurt
Mrs. Johnson was walking her dog early one morning, when she came near the home of that nice doctor and her friend she heard raised voices. Stopping for a minute to let Fluffy sniff the mailbox the elderly woman heard more yelling from inside and then was witness to the hurried exit of the doctor’s blonde friend. The young woman had slammed the front door so hard it had startled Fluffy from her investigation.
“There, there, Fluffy. It seems someone woke up in a bad mood this morning,” the elderly woman said to her dog as she watched the silver Volvo back out of the driveway and speed off with a squeal of tires.
The front door of the house opened and Dr. Fraiser exited. She walked quickly to her car, rummaging in her purse for the keys as she moved. Upon reaching the car she fumbled the keys out, dropping them onto the ground. “Damn it,” she swore and then bent down to pick them up. Rising, she then noticed one of her elderly neighbors standing by the mailbox. “Oh, good morning Mrs. Johnson; how are you and Fluffy today?” she asked while unlocking the car.
“We’re fine, dear. How are things with you?” the woman asked back.
Janet sighed; “Doing just fine, thank you. Well, I’m going to be late if I don’t leave. You and Fluffy have a good day,” the doctor said and with a wave to the old woman she climbed into her car.
Mrs. Johnson watched the doctor back out of the driveway and disappear down the road. She tugged on the small dog’s leash. “Let’s go Fluffy; we don’t want to miss our morning shows.” The pair began walking down the street towards their home and Mrs. Johnson couldn’t help but wonder what all the yelling had been about.
******
Half an hour later Janet rushed into the infirmary, pulling on her lab coat as she entered the room. “I’m sorry I’m late….,”the apology trailed off as she realized the infirmary was empty except for one of her orderlies busy restocking shelves. “Where is SG-1? Weren’t they gateing out this morning?” she asked the man.
“Their departure time was moved up; Dr. Warner did their pre-mission exams,” he informed her and continued with his restocking.
‘Damn, I was hoping to speak with Sam before she left. Now I have to wait until she returns to settle what happened this morning,’ the doctor thought to herself. With her shoulders slumped in defeat Janet walked slowly into her office, the mound of paperwork waiting there would keep her occupied until SG-1 returned.
*****
Two hours later and only partially finished with the stack of forms, Janet’s task was interrupted by the echoing claxon that signaled the gate was opening. A minute later Walter’s voice erupted from the loudspeaker, “Medical team to the embarkation room, medical team to the embarkation room!”
Jumping up from her desk so fast that the chair turned over, the doctor ran out of her office, barking orders to her triage team. In less than two minutes they were on their way to the Gate room; her thoughts on who was injured were thrust into the back of her mind as her sense of duty took over.
The team rushed into the Gate room just as the iris opened and had to duck low against the wall as staff blasts exited the shimmering horizon to pound the steel barriers located beneath the large observation window. With arms raised to cover her head, Janet flinched as more blasts peppered the wall. Her attention focused on the blue pool flickering with energy and she saw two figures emerge running as fast as they could; it was Daniel and Jack, who was cradling his arm.
She kept low and moved to help him but he waved her away. “I’m fine, help Carter first!” he yelled over the whine of staff blasts. Her heart jumped when he said this and ignoring the weapons fire, she stood straight up, facing the Gate.
Jack moved quickly just as another blast came through the Gate and threw himself at the doctor, knocking the small woman to the ground. “Damn it, Doc, you can’t help her if you’re dead,” he yelled in her ear. Janet struggled from his grasp just as Teal’c emerged from the Gate at a run, cradled in his arms was a familiar blonde figure. The iris slammed shut upon his return and the Gate room was silent except for the sounds of the trauma team moving to help the injured team members.
The doctor rose from the floor and with a glance to the Colonel, who waved her away, rushed to Teal’c and Sam. Nearing the large Jaffa she saw that both he and Sam were covered in blood. “I am uninjured, Dr. Frasier,” he told her, “It is Major Carter who needs your help.”
She couldn’t tell where the blood was coming from with the woman cradled in her friend’s arms; “Get me a gurney over here, now!” she yelled.
Two orderlies quickly moved to fill her order and the Jaffa laid his cargo on it. “Infirmary, now!” the doctor yelled and as they wheeled the gurney towards the door she began searching for wounds on the woman at a run beside it. Wielding a pair of surgical scissors she began cutting away Sam’s uniform, not caring about the trail of bloody material she left scattered on the floor on the way to the elevator. When the gurney came to a stop in the elevator car she had reached the blood soaked t-shirt worn by her lover, cutting it away she revealed a gaping wound in the woman’s side. Quickly grabbing sterile pads from one of the nurses, she pressed them into the wound to try and staunch the blood flow while one of the other nurses worked to administer IV fluids. “We need to go straight to surgery,” she informed her team and when the doors opened they rushed the gurney to a waiting surgical suite.

Several hours later, Janet emerged from surgery to find the rest of SG-1 waiting for news of their team mate. With his arm cradled in a sling, Jack was the first to speak. “Well, Doc, is she going to be okay?”
Taking a deep breath, Janet replied, “I had to remove a kidney and repair her liver. She’s lost a lot of blood and will need several more transfusions but for now she’s stable.”
“She’ll pull through this, Janet,” Daniel said, moving to place a hand on her shoulder.
Placing her hand on his and squeezing it, the doctor nodded. “I need to go check on her in recovery. For right now, no visitors,” she said giving them all a stern look. “I’ll let you know when you can see her.”
The men all nodded in agreement and watched as the petite woman walked away from them.

Janet entered the recovery suite to find one of her nurses adjusting the IV lines attached to Sam’s arm. “You can go now, Becky. I’ll finish that,” the doctor told her. With a nod of her head to her boss, the nurse left the two women alone. Janet finished adjusting the lines and checked the monitoring equipment. She stood at the foot of the bed for a moment, gazing at the pale, still form of the woman she loved with all of her heart. Running her hands across her face she sighed and then walked to retrieve a chair from against the wall, bringing it to rest beside the bed. Before sitting down she took a moment to trail her fingers through the short blonde locks of her lover, letting her fingers trail down the side of Sam’s face to caress her cheek. “You don’t know how close I came to losing you,” she said softly. Sitting down she grasped Sam’s hand in her own and using it as a pillow, rested her forehead on the side of the bed.
Sometime later, she wasn’t sure how long, the doctor felt Sam’s hand move. She looked up to see the blonde’s eyes flicker open. “Jan?” she croaked.
“Hey, you,” Janet said. “Do you want some water?”
Sam’s head nodded slightly and the doctor picked up a cup from the bedside table. She cradled the blonde's head in one hand and held the cup to her lips with the other, letting her take a few small sips. Once finished she let her lover’s head rest back on the pillow. Sam cleared her throat and spoke, “I did a good job this time didn’t I?”
Janet nodded. “You sure did. You are now down a kidney, so try not to do it again,” the doctor told her with a small smile on her face.
Sam groaned and squeezed her eyes shut. “I’m sorry,” she said softly.
“There’s no need to say that. You can’t control what happens on missions,” Janet remarked.
“No, not for this, for this morning,” Sam told her. “It was stupid and I shouldn’t have gotten so upset.”
The doctor’s eyes began to tear and she reached out to cup the blonde’s chin. “And I shouldn’t have made such a big deal out of it. I hate to think that the last time I saw you we had left each other angry. Never again will we leave the house without settling an argument,” Janet told her.
Sam nodded in agreement. “Never again,” she said.
“Good, now that that is settled, you need to get some rest. If I don’t let the guys in here to see you soon they may take matters into their own hands,” Janet informed her with a grin. The doctor leaned over and placed a kiss on the pale forehead. “Sleep, I’ll be back later to check on you.”
“Yes, M’am,” Sam said with a groggy smile on her face.
Giving Sam a smile, the doctor left the bedside and walked to the door, she stopped and watched as her lover’s eyes closed and her breathing slowed. Wiping a tear from her eye, Janet said softly, “Never again, I promise.”
