The short blonde nervously fidgeted while she waited beside their luggage for her girlfriend to return with the rental car. She knew there was no reason to be nervous but there was no telling her body that; this was worse than the first time she’d flown an F-18. Her stomach was in knots and even though the temperature outside was fairly cold, she was sweating bullets. Shifting from one foot to the other she raised her eyes to the sky and stared at the gray clouds, at least they would have snow for Christmas she thought; that was something she had to look forward to.
A blue four-door Jeep Wrangler pulled up to the curb and the window rolled down. “Hey there, short and sexy; you need a lift?” the driver said loud enough to be heard over the surrounding airport noise.
Jennifer shook her head and rolled her eyes at Cass. “Come help me load the luggage, silly,” she said, lifting two of the suitcases.
Cass chuckled as she put the SUV in park and popped the rear hatch. She knew Jennifer was nervous about coming to spend Christmas with her folks, but with both of them having a week off for the holiday they wanted to spend as much time with her parents as possible. Mainly because the upcoming year was going to be extremely busy for both of the younger women, what with Cass in her final year of residency and Jennifer being chosen for Top Gun school. Both of her mothers were so proud of them and were looking forward to spending this time of the holidays together with the younger couple.
Tossing their smaller luggage into the back of the Jeep, Cass made to move towards the driver’s side when she was pulled up short by a hand on her shoulder. “I may not be looking forward to this get together but I do want to get there in one piece. I’m driving, hun,” Jennifer told her girlfriend.
“I do not drive that bad,” the younger woman said, her bottom lip poking into a pout.
Jennifer opened the driver’s door and remarked, “No, not bad, just really fast.”
Cass stared at her in shock and then with a huffing breath dragged her feet as she moved towards the passenger’s side door. Opening it she returned a remark, “Well, at least I would have gotten us there quick and all this nervousness could be over with.” She climbed in and fastened her seatbelt, glancing sideways at Jennifer she commented, “I still don’t know why you are so nervous.”
Cranking the Jeep, Jennifer ignored the comment and eased out into the open lane and towards the airport exit. After a few minutes of silence she took a deep breath and finally gave Cass an answer. “I’m not worried about spending time with your parents. It’s the fact that the entire team will be there for Christmas.”
The Jeep stopped as they waited for traffic to slow down and Cass started to say something but Jennifer stopped her with a raised finger. “Don’t give me that whole spiel about I know them and they know me. This was before I started living with, wait, sleeping with their niece,” she said and let out a frustrated growl. Continuing she said, “I know I shouldn’t be worried but I feel like I should be preparing for an interrogation or something, babe.”
“Awww, sweetie, that’s all you’re worried about? You’ll be fine. I’m sure both Mom and Sam have told them all to be on their best behaviors,” Cass said and smiled at her girlfriend.
A break in the traffic appeared and Jennifer quickly sped forward, instead of replying to Cass’s statement, taking her place among the multitude of travelers on the highway that day. Once she was satisfied with her speed she set the cruise control and eased back in her seat. Glancing over at Cass she picked back up the conversation. “Dr. Jackson and Teal’c I do believe have no problem doing that but the General, that’s another story,” she said with almost a groaning tone.
“I’ll make him behave, don’t worry,” Cass replied but before she could say anything else her cell phone rang. “Hello, Mother,” she said, answering the phone. Jennifer waved at the phone and Cass grinned. “Jennifer says hello, too,” she said trying not to laugh. “We should be there in about an hour unless traffic gets worse,” she continued.
Jennifer concentrated on the road and was only half paying attention to Cass’s conversation with Janet, although, from her perspective it really wasn’t much of a conversation actually since all Cass seemed to be saying was lots of, “uh huh and a few nopes.”
“We’ll be fine, Mother. Just make sure you have plenty of your homemade cookies on hand,” Cass remarked and after a few more short answers bid her mother goodbye.
“Is everything alright?” Jennifer asked as she eased the Jeep over to pass a slower vehicle.
“Hmm? Oh…yeah, everything is fine. Mom was just checking up on us,” Cass replied.
Jennifer glanced sideways at her girlfriend, she knew that tone; Cass was up to something. “Are you sure everything is okay?” Jennifer asked again and all Cass did was nod her head and smile.
Seeing that she wasn’t going to get a straight answer from the younger woman Jennifer concentrated on driving. Once she got them there then maybe she could finally get rid of that queasy feeling she’d had all morning, or she could just go hide in the tree house when they arrived, that would solve the problem of being grilled by Cass’s uncles. The time on the road passed quickly and soon they found themselves driving down the street Cass grew up on. Cars began to appear as they grew closer to the house and arriving in front of it they found a good many vehicles parked around.
“Who do all these cars belong to?” mumbled Jennifer as she cut the Jeep’s engine off.
Trying to contain a laugh Cass quickly undid her seatbelt and opened her door. She stepped out of the vehicle and turned back to her girlfriend. “I may have forgotten to tell you a few things about Christmas this year,” she admitted.
Jennifer stared at her in open mouthed shock. Finally she stuttered out, “Cass, how much of your family is here?”
Before Cass could answer the front door opened and a herd of children varying in ages rushed out, running straight for the Jeep. “Cassie!” they all yelled.
Before she was tackled by them Cass quickly replied to Jennifer’s question. “All of my Mom’s and Sam’s, plus SG-1 and a few others from the base.”
Before she could here what Jennifer had to say about that revelation the younger woman was rushed away by her cousins, leaving her girlfriend to stare after them as they disappeared into the house. After a few minutes a knock on her window made Jennifer jump in her seat. She turned her head to see Sam standing beside the Jeep with a knowing smile on her face. Opening the door Jennifer stepped out of the vehicle and stood beside Sam, staring at the house.
“She didn’t tell you it was our year to hold the Christmas gathering?” Sam asked.
Jennifer swallowed hard and shook her head quickly. Sam laughed and placed a hand on the younger woman’s shoulder. “Don’t worry, it will be fine. Look at it this way though, if you feel overwhelmed then you can go hide in the tree house with Jack,” the older blonde remarked.
“Gee, thanks. Is that supposed to help me feel better?” Jennifer asked a tad sarcastically.
“Nope,” Sam replied with a grin. “Come on let’s get your stuff and then brave the gauntlet,” she added.
“I’m staying in the Jeep,” Jennifer said quickly and tried to open the driver door.
Sam chuckled and grabbed her by the back of the jacket collar. “Nope, think of it as an initiation of sorts. I know you’ll pass with flying colors,” she told the younger woman.
Taking a deep breath Jennifer glanced at Sam, then back towards the house. “Oh, okay then. But Cass is o going to pay for this one…big time,” she told Sam.
“Don’t worry, I’m sure Janet is giving her an earful right about now, not to mention her grandmother and her aunts,” Sam told her. “Now let’s get you into the house.” Sam walked around to the back of the Jeep and opened the hatch to get out the luggage.
Jennifer still stared at the house…a house full of Cass’s relatives. “Oh yeah, babe, paybacks are hell,” she muttered softly and turned to help Sam with the luggage then followed her towards the house. This was definitely a Christmas she was going to remember.
