sinadino..this is a one year later thing...Christmas from last year at the cabin revisited I guess
The flickering orange glow of the large fire cast dappled light across the cabin’s main room as the sky outside darkened. The two women occupying the cabin went about their separate tasks. One curled up on the large sofa with a book resting in her hands and the other sat on the floor, surrounded by small bits and pieces of the snow blower.
“I can’t believe you talked me into letting you take that apart in here,” Janet muttered.
Without glancing behind her Sam replied, “Well, I could have taken it apart in the shed…where there is no heat…” she let her voice trail away and was rewarded with a loud sigh. “Besides, I need the blower to find the car tomorrow. If I have to dig anymore I won’t be able to walk erect for a week,” grumbled the blonde.
“I warned you,” Janet said looking at the blonde over the top of her book. “I told you a storm was moving in but you insisted on coming up here this weekend.”
“I like spending Christmas up here. It’s become a tradition,” mumbled Sam as she maneuvered a screw back into place.
“And I like it, too, it’s just one day we’re going to get trapped up here and they’ll never hear from us again,” Janet grumbled, the bad weather having put her in a grumpy mood.
Sam let her shoulders slump and she gazed up at the ceiling. “Next time I’ll check the weather report before we take a trip,” she said staring at a spot on the wooden beam above her.
Janet set her book down and slipped from the couch then she quietly crawled up behind Sam as she stared at the ceiling. Moving close to the blonde’s ear she whispered, “And I’ll remind you to do exactly that before we leave next time, but since we’re here now…might as well make the best of it.”
Leaning back the blonde let her body rest against that of her smaller partner. “I can think of a few things to pass the time,” Sam said in a nonchalant tone.
Bringing her arms up around the blonde’s waist Janet murmured, “You clean up this mess and I’ll get us something to drink. Then we’ll head upstairs for the rest of the night.” The doctor ended the statement with a soft kiss placed along the curve of the blonde’s neck.
Letting a small groan escape from her lips, Sam mumbled, “Give me five minutes and I’ll meet you upstairs.”
Janet chuckled and placed a quick peck on Sam’s lips then rose from the floor; which caused Sam to fall back, seeing that her support had just moved. She grinned up at the doctor from the floor and then pulled herself upright to begin picking up the various pieces of the little machine. Janet watched for a second then turned to make her way into the kitchen.
Walking past the back door she saw movement out of the corner of her eye and paused to take a step backwards. Peering out of the window she could barely make out the shape of two small figures; nearly enveloped in the deep snow on the back deck. “Sam, there’s something on the back deck,” she said in a flat tone.
The couple stared at one another for a few seconds and then both shook their heads. “They would have called if they were coming to the States,” Sam said.
“I’m sure they would have. I mean they had no idea we would be here,” Janet agreed.
There was the noise of scratching from the back door and they both gave each other confused looks. Sam rose from the floor and made her way to the back door. Shrugging her shoulders at the doctor she opened the door to reveal two familiar looking animals. They both raised little mitten covered paws and said in unison with loud voices, “Merry Christmas!”
Sam and Janet looked at one another in shock. Janet finally stuttered out, “Merry Christmas, to you, too.”
“How did you two get here?” Sam asked in wonderment.
Janet motioned the animals into the house before they could reply. While they stood by the fire, getting warmed up Sam asked again, “How did you get here?”
But before they could answer a loud knock sounded on the front door and Janet went to answer it. She opened the door to reveal the caretakers of their two visitors. “Have you seen….” Jo asked and her voice trailed off as Janet pointed towards the fireplace. “I guess you have,” she remarked with a smile at the doctor.
Jo strode into the cabin followed by her shorter partner, who stopped to talk with the doctor as she moved towards the fireplace. “I’m sorry. We told them they had to wait until tomorrow to visit because it was so late,” Tara told the doctor.
“Actually their timing was perfect, we were just getting ready to call it a night,” Janet replied.
Jo walked over and knelt next to the two critters. “I told you two we would come in the morning, after I called them,” she emphasized, giving the animals a hard stare.
Sam laughed inwardly at the faces the two animals were making upon receiving the scolding. She couldn’t imagine what it was like for Jo and Tara trying to keep up with the inquisitive creatures all the time; and with those looks firmly in place, the two must have been through this routine several times before.
“Sorry, Sam, they slipped out of the house while we were unloading luggage. I knew they would come straight here,” the tall brunette officer said.
“No problem, Jo. I was beginning to wonder if you all were coming to the States for the holidays,” Sam told her, holding out a hand to the kneeling woman.
Jo accepted the hand up from the floor and stood. “Didn’t think we would make it but we managed to catch a ride,” the taller woman admitted. “We’ll take these two and head back over to Tara’s brother’s house.”
Two tiny voices both groaned in disappointment at this statement and the tall woman looked down at them sternly. The two animals quieted and began pulling their little coats and mittens back on.
“We wanted to surprise them,” whined the blond animal. “I told you we’d get in trouble,” the brown one said.
This started the two animals grumbling back and forth between them, Sam couldn’t help herself and laugh out loud at them. “I sorry, that’s just hilarious,” the blonde said, still snickering at the pair.
Jo shot her a glare and remarked, “I can leave them if you’d like me to,” she said in a smart tone.
Holding up her hands quickly Sam shook her head. “Sorry, no can do, we don’t have enough food,” she said seriously and returned the glare to the taller woman.
The two stared at each other for a few seconds and then both burst out laughing. On the floor the two small animals stared up at them in confusion. Humans were so strange, they thought. Tara motioned to them from beside the front door and the two animals made their way over to her.
“We’ll come back tomorrow afternoon, you two,” Tara told them as they grew closer.
Janet saw the dejected looks on the two furry faces and knelt down to their level. She placed a hand on each of their small shoulders and made the comment, “You know when you come back tomorrow I can have fresh coffee and cookies waiting on you.”
The little animals ears perked at this knowledge and they both clapped their paws in joy. Janet glanced up at Tara who nodded her thanks at the suggestion. “Now it’s late and we need to get some rest after all that flying today,” Tara told them.
“I’ll agree to that,” Jo seconded as she moved to stand beside her shorter girlfriend.
“We’ll call you two tomorrow to set up something,” Tara told Janet, who now was leaning back against Sam who had walked to stand behind the doctor. The shorter brunette bid the couple goodnight and escorted the two creatures from the cabin to the waiting car.
Jo waved goodbye as she backed out of the door. “I’ll call late, really late in the morning,” she told them and they grinned at her then waved goodbye as the tall woman closed the door.
The doctor rose from the floor until she stood enveloped in the blonde’s arms, she sighed and shook her head. “Looks like we’ll have plenty to do tomorrow,” she said softly.
Sam lowered her head until she could whisper in the doctor’s ear. “And we have plenty to do tonight, my dear. Where were we before they showed up?”
“I was on my way to fix us drinks and you were cleaning up the floor,” Janet replied.
Sam released the doctor from her arms and swatted her on the behind, making her jump forward. “Well, hurry up woman, we have things to do,” the blonde ordered with a crooked grin on her face.
The doctor gave her partner a sexy grin of her own and turned towards the kitchen. She walked away from the blonde with an exaggerated sway to her hips. Glancing back over her shoulder she saw Sam swallow hard and then quickly kneel to begin gathering parts from the floor. With a wicked smile the doctor entered the kitchen, grabbed two bottles of water from the fridge and then rushed back through the living room to disappear up the stairs. Once she reached the top she glanced over the railing and saw Sam give up on picking everything up.
The blonde pushed everything into a pile and scooted it out of the way, jumped up from the floor and made a beeline for the stairs. Janet fell back onto the bed, closed her eyes and waited; soon she was rewarded with the weight of another body moving onto the bed and soft breath ghosting over her face. All thoughts of tomorrow’s visitors left the doctor’s brain as her partner began the slow torture that was her version of foreplay.
