The warrior stood in the open doorway of the small tavern letting her gaze travel around the crowded room. She could barely make out the top of a familiar blonde head through the group gathered around the bard. Nodding her head she walked into the tavern, making her way towards Gabrielle. As she strode past the bar a rather large man, who had too much to drink from the judge of his walk, approached her.

“Hello sweetheart, how about you share a drink with me,” he slurred and made to grab her arm.

Xena’s blue eyes turned icy and she shot him a glare as her lip curled in a snarl. Seeing that his advance was not welcomed, and wanting to keep all his body parts the man quickly backpedaled away from the tall warrior. A small grin appeared to replace the snarl as Xena grew closer to where Gabrielle stood next to a small stage. Pausing in her movement, the warrior watched as her companion of two years received numerous comments from what was left of the audience to one of her stories. Xena quirked an eyebrow at the persistence of one young man who kept trying to elicit an answer from the bard but she kept ignoring him. The tall warrior watched as the people around the bard dispersed until all were gone except for the young man. Settling back against the nearby wall she waited to see how Gabrielle would handle this little problem or to see if she would have to come to the rescue.

The bard’s hands moved constantly as she tried to explain something to the young man, who kept trying to interject something. Finally Gabrielle’s shoulders slumped as he managed to blurt out whatever it was he kept trying to ask and she gave him a small smile then pointed towards where Xena stood, leaning against the wall. He turned to look in the direction she pointed as the bard said something to him and with a wide-eyed look then a gulping swallow he quickly nodded, moving away from the small blonde woman.

With a confused look on her face, Xena made her way over to the now free bard and asked, “What was all that about?”

Gabrielle looked up and replied with a smile, “Oh, just saving a poor farm boy’s life.”

“How so?” Xena asked as they moved to sit at a nearby table.

“I just pointed out that you were the jealous type who chose to slash first and ask questions later,” the bard said, trying to contain a laugh.

Xena shot her a wounded look. “Gabrielle, that is not true,” she huffed in answer.

“What about that guy in the last town?” the bard remarked.

“He wouldn’t take no for an answer and besides he touched you in an inappropriate place,” commented the warrior, crossing her arms and giving the bard a sideways glance.

“I think I could have handled that one, Xena. You just didn’t give me a chance,” Gabrielle pointed out.

A small pout appeared on the warrior’s face and she blew a huff of air through her lips, causing her bangs to fly up. “I am not jealous,” she said in an almost whining tone.

“Are too,” Gabrielle remarked.

“Am not,” was the warrior’s reply.

“Overprotective then,” returned Gabrielle.

Xena opened her mouth to comment then shut it quickly. Standing up she said,
“I’m going to get us some food.”

The bard watched as Xena moved towards the bar and she smiled. “Call it whatever you like. It lets me know how you feel, Xena,” she said softly. “And until you admit it to yourself I guess that’s all I have for right now.”
