A tall blonde woman dressed in a nice jacket and black boots stood in front of the three story house, her gaze switching from a piece of paper in her hand and back to the intimidating building before her. She was sure she had seen a glimpse of someone peeking out from behind heavy dark curtains, but still she remained rooted to the spot. Knowing this was the right, sensitive thing to do, she had been so certain with every step her feet took, sensing somehow that this had to be done. But now that she was here, she was definitely having second thoughts.

Taking a deep breath, she finally forced herself to move from the spot up the pebbled walkway to the large door. Climbing the few stairs, she hit the lighted doorbell button and waited, wrapping her arms around her middle as the wind began to pick up. She waited in silence for a few moments, the only sounds the whistle of the invisible force playing with her hair and the pounding of her own heart. The thought of turning and running had crossed her mind but she was determined to do what she had come here to do.

Finally the door opened inward and a face she knew all too well stared back at her, the expression just as confused as hers. The brunette woman of the house stared at the blonde on her doorstep, blinking back a few tears and taking in the sight before her. She stepped aside to let her visitor inside without saying a word.

Sam walked past the woman silently, taking in the grand entrance hall with its many mirrors, a coat rack and a beautiful hand carved storage bench. Turning back to face the rich woman, Sam shrugged off her coat and as she handed it to this universe’s Janet Fraiser, she took the opportunity to study the woman more closely.

She was exactly as Sam remembered her. The same auburn hair curling around her small ears, soft brown eyes that gazed sadly back at her and the same perfectly kissable lips that Sam never could resist. Still, this Janet was as different as she was the same. Large golden earrings dangled from her ears, matched by the necklace that draped around her neck and onto her silky green shirt, which covered a sexy torso and fanned out over black stretch plants.

Momentarily distracted by the sight of a living Janet Fraiser, she missed what the woman was saying. Shaking her head to bring her back to the present, Sam took a deep breath and said, “I’m sorry, I missed that. What did you say?”

“I said we should probably go in the living room and talk,” Janet repeated, giving the woman who looked like her partner an understanding look. “Would you like some coffee?”

Sam shook her head. “No, thanks,” she replied softly as she followed Janet into the even bigger living room, complete with a corner sectional sofa, a deep crimson color. The lady of the house took a seat in a matching arm chair across from the sofa, motioning Sam to sit on the couch before her.

“Your ex-husband called not too long ago,” Janet began, crossing one leg over the other one.

The blonde coughed and shook her head back and forth quickly. “He’s never been my husband,” Sam clarified. “Not in my reality, anyway.”

“Right,” the brunette replied, clearing her throat and shifting uncomfortably in her seat. “Your reality. He tried to explain that, but didn’t get too far. I’m afraid he and I never really … got along,” Janet finished, smiling softly at the woman seated on her couch.

The blonde flashed one of her classic broad smiles. “No, I would guess not. So did he tell you … about your Sam?” she asked timidly, her fingers that had folded themselves earlier in her lap squeezing tighter every second.

Losing her smile instantly, brown eyes darted downward and Janet brushed away a tear, her gaze anywhere but Sam. “Yes, he told me that she died…” at this, the woman’s breath caught in her throat and she closed her eyes, shaking her head back and forth, one hand over her mouth.

Realizing that the woman’s mask was beginning to crumble and knowing from experience what would happen, Sam slid off the couch and onto the wide arm of the chair. Taking the smaller woman gently into her arms, the blonde blinked back tears as Janet’s arms slid around her waist and tightened. After a few moments, both women were crying, their tears soaking Janet’s hair and Sam’s shirt.

“I am so sorry,” Sam choked out through the cascade of tears, remembering all too well how it felt to lost the woman she loved … how it still felt. Pushing away the thought of how strange it was to be holding her dead lover in her arms, she focused rather on the grief that swallowed them both.

Before she knew what was happening, Janet had pulled back, her face angling upward. Without a word, the smaller woman pressed her lips to the taller one’s, their tears now mingling in the union of their mouths. Her body taking over, Sam kissed Janet back, reveling in the touch, the sensation and her raw need growling deep in her once again. She hadn’t felt this way in three years, since the last time she and her Janet had …

Her brain cleared, the thought of her Janet bringing the blonde back to reality. Breaking the kiss, Sam stood up and, breathing heavily, brushed away a few tears as she spoke, “Janet, I’m not sure this is the right thing to do. You just lost her … and I lost mine years ago. Is this even healthy?”

Janet stood up beside the taller woman and took her hands. “How many people do you know who have this chance?” she whispered softly. “I promise I won’t ask you to stay. But please, let me say good-bye.” She took a shaky breath and stepped closer, her body making contact with Sam’s. “Did you get to say good-bye?” she asked softly, her breath hot against Sam’s neck.

Sam swallowed hard and looked down at the woman, her own breath catching in her throat at the wet heat from Janet’s mouth. “No,” she whispered, a tear slipping silently from her eye down her cheek. Brown eyes followed its progress until a small hand reached up and gently wiped it away.

“Then say good-bye,” Janet replied in soothing tones as she closed the distance between them, pulling Sam’s lips to her own, meeting in another earth-shattering kiss.
