The milling crowd of people slowly made their way through the packed airport as tinny sounding voices came from loudspeakers announcing arrivals, departures and delays. One such voice made a woman with short feathered brunette hair and a Mediterranean cast to her features, shake a fist up at the intercom over her head. “Just once I’d like to be able to shoot whoever messes up the airline schedules,” she fumed out loud.

Several people around her nodded their heads in agreement as she grumbled a few choice words and then picking up her carry on bag, Captain Olivia Benson made her way towards the airport bar, she needed a drink. It wasn’t just for relaxation purposes, no, she needed it to bolster her resolve for when she had to make the phone call to her wife, explaining just why she would be late for their anniversary dinner.

Upon reaching the bar she slammed her bag down on the ground and climbed onto the stool. Catching the bartender’s attention by waving fifty at him she said, “Jack and Coke and don’t let the glass stay empty until I tell you,” she ordered. The bartender quickly mixed the drink and slid it towards her. Picking it up and finishing the drink in two large gulps she set the glass back down for him to refill then let her head rest on her hand.

“You know if you slam them back like that until the flight leaves I may have to carry you on board,” a voice said from behind her back.

Olivia raised her head slowly and glanced over her shoulder. With a crooked grin she replied, “Well I guess I need to buy you a few too so we can just stumble on together,” she said in jest.

The tall blonde dressed in Air Force blues smiled at the other woman. “And have Janet kill me when she comes to pick me up from the airport in Denver, no thank you, Detective,“ she replied.

Slipping off of the stool Olivia turned to face the blonde and with a broad smile held open her arms. “Sam Carter, it’s been years,” she said as the woman stepped towards her for a hug. “And it’s Captain Benson now, thank you,” Olivia said in the blonde’s ear.

Sam stepped back from the hug. “Wow, it has been a while hasn’t it? How have you been?” she asked as they both took seats at the bar and Sam ordered a drink.

“Oh just fine,” Olivia said as she took a sip from her refilled glass. “Promoted…married…became a mother,” she said nonchalantly.

Sam did a double take as she glanced at the former detective. “Married I knew about, it made headlines but not the mother part. Did you or Alex…” Sam began to ask and Olivia interrupted.

“We adopted; as much as going through childbirth is supposed to be a wonderful experience we both agreed there were too many children in foster homes who needed a chance at happiness. So we adopted older children, twins actually, a boy and a girl. They will turn seventeen in a couple of weeks,” Olivia said in a proud voice. “It just seemed the logical thing to do since Alex was elected District Attorney and I was promoted to Captain.”

“Sounds like you’ve been busy these past years,” Sam said smiling at the woman next to her.

“Very busy,” Olivia returned and then asked, “What about you?” Lowering her voice she added, “How many times have you saved the world since I saw you last?”

Sam gave her a sly grin, “Oh, a few times. Why do you think it was so easy for you to get married legally?”

Olivia’s eyebrows rose at the blonde’s last remark. “What do you mean?” she asked.

“Let’s just say the President owed me and my team a few favors and it wasn’t for saving the world…it was the universe,” Sam said in a low voice.

“Does that also explain the extra gold stars on your lapels?” the brunette asked.

Sam nodded and replied, “Yup, among other things.”

“Well since it seems we are both waiting on the same flight, you have plenty of time to tell me, so spill it, General,” Olivia ordered as her lips twisted in a grin.

“That’s Brigadier General to you, Captain and we’re going to need refills cause my throat will be parched by the time I finish this story,” Sam replied with a broad smile.

Olivia motioned for the bartender to refill their glasses and then they moved to a more secluded table where the two friends began catching up on each others lives a little more in detail.
