The short-haired brunette detective strolled down the crowded sidewalk. In her arms she carried a full grocery bag containing all the ingredients for a scrumptious home-cooked meal. It had been her task to pick up the food and Alex was awarded the job of cleaning up Olivia’s apartment by luck of a coin toss between the couple. She smiled to herself remembering Alex’s reaction upon loosing but she had quickly calmed the lawyer down when she pointed out the other option had been for her to cook dinner.

Still grinning at that image the detective neared her apartment building and was snapped out of her thoughts by the sound of sirens…very close sirens. She rounded the corner and found herself face to face with a very large fireman. Stopping abruptly she back pedaled a few steps and then tried to go around him.

“I’m sorry Ma’am, but you have to wait until we get the scene cleared up,” he told her holding her back with a thick arm.

Olivia peered over his shoulder and saw the fire engine parked directly in front of her apartment building. She saw other firemen escorting occupants out of the building and failed to see a familiar blonde head in the milling crowd. Tossing the bag of groceries into a nearby garbage can she then grabbed her shield from her belt, flashing it in the man’s face. “I’m a NYPD detective…that’s my building and I’m going in,” the brunette stated in her most authoritative voice.

The fireman eyed the determined look on the woman’s face and moved his arm. “Very well, Detective; it was just kitchen fire. They should have it cleaned up by now,” he told her.

Olivia moved past him, her quick strides carrying her through the crowd, into the building and up the stairwell. She passed several firemen coming down the stairs, many which were laughing among themselves. When she reached her floor she found another small group of firemen gathered around a familiar figure wearing a bathrobe. As she strode towards the group she could hear Alex’s laughter ring out and then the men laughed as well. Stopping a few feet from them she cleared her throat and waited.

Alex heard the noise and saw the detective waiting with arms crossed. “Gentlemen, thank you for your help but I think I have some explaining to do,” the lawyer said to the group.

A few of the men looked towards Olivia and then back to the blonde; trying to hide their smiles the men bid farewell to the lawyer and made their way past Olivia then down the stairs.

When they had the hallway to themselves Olivia rushed forward and gathered the lawyer in her arms. “Are you okay? What happened?” she asked in a rush of questions.

“Promise you won’t get mad at me,” Alex said first.

“Mad? Why would I get mad at you, sweetheart?” Olivia asked.

Alex didn’t answer but instead took Olivia’s hand and pulled her towards the open apartment door. Olivia’s nose twitched at the smell of burnt plastic and she sneezed. They soon stood in the kitchen which now had smoke damage and white fire extinguisher powder everywhere. She turned to look at Alex who stood patiently chewing on her lower lip, waiting for her girlfriend’s reaction.

“What did you do?” the detective muttered.

“I tried to bake,” Alex said in a meek voice.

“What?!” Olivia said in amazement.

“I knew you were going to be cooking a wonderful meal for us and I wanted to fix the dessert. So I found a cake mix in the cabinet and followed the instructions to the letter,” the lawyer said in a rush of words.

“How did all of this happen if you followed the instructions,” Olivia asked waving a hand towards the mess.

Alex blushed and in a quiet voice said, “I used a plastic pan.”

Olivia just stared at the lawyer as Alex continued. “I decided to jump in the shower while it baked and as I was getting out I smelled it burning. I had just thrown on my robe and run into the kitchen when the firemen busted open the door,” Alex told her girlfriend. “They put out the small fire caused by the melting plastic and then proceeded to explain to me the correct pan needed for baking,” she added with a small smile.

Olivia shook her head and running a hand through her hair sighed heavily. “I think you need to stay out of the kitchen from now on my dear,” she said to Alex.

“So you’re not even the least bit upset I almost burnt down your apartment?” a stunned Alex asked.

“No, I’m not upset. I’m relieved you’re okay,” Olivia said as she pulled the lawyer towards her and wrapped arms around her slim waist.

“But…” Alex began to say but a kiss from the detective stopped her speech.

Olivia pulled back and remarked, “No buts, you’re fine…the apartment’s fine…we’re fine.”

“Okay,” Alex said softly.

“Good, now why don’t you get dressed and we’ll go out to eat since in my haste to discover what was going on I trashed the groceries,” Olivia said with a grin.

“I can be ready in twenty minutes,” the lawyer replied and removed herself from the detective’s grip then moved towards the bedroom. Just before she disappeared into the room she called out to Olivia. ” I’m going to pay for the damages, you know.”

“I know,” Olivia returned and then under her breath she mumbled, “and I’m going to pick out a child-proof stove so this doesn’t happen a third time.”

The detective moved into the ruined kitchen to see what she could salvage while waiting for Alex to get ready. She really wasn’t upset about the kitchen, no, what had upset her was the thought that she could have lost the lawyer just because of some stupid mistake. It was time to invest in cooking lessons for her girlfriend she thought, that or she really did need to child-proof the new kitchen.

AN:Anytime a character admits to setting their stove on fire trying to boil water..under oath...makes them fair game for stories like this....(not saying Alex is stupid..she just has her moments...like we all do)
