An: No beta...she be asleep
Captain Samantha Carter sat with tired shoulders slumped as she waited for her turn to be checked over by the CMO. Running a dirty hand through her sweat laden hair she blew a breath of frustration out through her lips. They had come up empty again in the search for Daniel’s wife and brother-in-law, finding instead an outpost of Apophis’s loyal Jaffa. After escaping capture and fighting their way back to the gate she was ready to get the physical over with, take a hot shower and get some much needed rest.
A loud curse was heard from two beds away as Dr. Warner began his examination of Colonel O’Neill. “Damn it Warner! A little common courtesy and warm up those icebergs you call hands before laying them on me next time!” her disgruntled CO said in a loud voice that carried through out the infirmary.
Sam shivered in her seat; she couldn’t stand the new CMO. Even though she knew he was being professional, the man just came off all dispassionate and uncaring about his charges. Not to mention the cold hands he always seemed to have and the permanent leer he had on his face whenever he examined her; it made her skin crawl.
Listening to the continued grumblings of her CO she closed her eyes and thought back to their first CMO. A rather spunky petite woman, who was made of steel it seemed, except when she examined you. The doctor’s soft brown eyes and cheerful smile had made you feel better no matter what she had to do to you. Even the Colonel submitted to her physicals quietly, well usually quietly, he always found something to complain about but the doctor always had a quick remark and smile for his grumblings.
“Damn it man!” O’Neill growled out. “There is nothing wrong with my eyes get that light out of them!”
Sam turned around and saw the Colonel slide off the gurney. “I’m fine and so are the members of my team. Go check out SG3, they took most of the heavy fire guarding our backsides,” her CO told him and moved away from the now upset doctor.
“Colonel O’Neill it is standard procedure…” Warner began to say.
With a wave of his hand O’Neill remarked, ”I outrank you, we’re leaving.”
Jack O’Neill motioned to the rest of SG-1 and they slid from their gurneys to follow him out of the infirmary. As they made their way towards the elevator Sam drew alongside him. “Are you okay, Sir?”
“Yeah, Carter I’m fine. It’s just that Warner gives me the willies, don’t know why. I miss that first doctor we had; what was her name?” he asked as they stopped at the elevator.
Sam let her lips twist in a wistful smile and answered, ”Janet, Sir. Janet Fraiser, and yes, she was something special wasn’t she, Sir?”
“She sure was; I liked her. Damn snakes! Why do they always have to get the good ones?” muttered O’Neill as they walked into the empty car.
Sam stood behind her three male teammates and quietly nodded her head. She remembered soft touches, shy looks and words unspoken from the auburn haired doctor. They had lost a fine addition to the SGC and she had lost the chance to explore feelings stirred by the doctor’s actions, ones that she could never return now…thanks to their new enemies.
