Detective Olivia Benson had been chosen to represent the department at a law enforcement conference in, of all places, New Orleans. Taking advantage of the free vacation, she talked Alex into taking a few days off as well and the couple planned to explore the city after Olivia’s presentation…
And that was where she now found herself, waiting for four more speakers before she could have a turn. Pushing the metal chair back on two legs and balancing as she listened to the good ole boys in front of her tell stories, she didn’t know whether to yawn or butt into the conversation and put her two cents in.
Resigning herself to her fate of listening to the deep drawl of the Texas sheriff at the podium at the moment Olivia settled the chair back on the floor. Just then something wet hit her in the back of the neck. Reaching a hand up she found what she hoped was water and wiped it away. Looking around, she tried to spot the culprit.
A few rows behind her sat a sandy-haired blonde woman who had a sheepish smile on her face. The woman motioned for Liv to move a little to the right and once she did this a stream of water arced over the seats to hit one of the men in front of the brunette detective. Olivia stifled a laugh as he whirled around to find out who did the act; she just shrugged when he glanced at her before turning back around.
She glanced over at the other woman and standing quietly, moved to take an empty seat next to her. “Olivia Benson, NYPD,” she said, holding out a hand.
The blonde moved to shake the hand but had to transfer the water pistol to her other free hand first. With a crooked grin she replied, “Nora Delaney, NOPD. Sorry about that, I was trying to hit Bubba.”
Olivia snorted. “Is that really his name?”
Nora smirked. “You’re in the South; some people actually name their children that here.”
The brunette stopped her laughter. “Sorry, no offense.”
“None taken; I’ve lived here all my life and it still makes me laugh,“ Nora admitted. “So…not finding the speeches interesting enough?”
“I just hate waiting. I have one to give but not until later this afternoon if they keep up at this pace,” Liv grumbled.
“Feel like becoming an accomplice?” Nora asked, pulling another pistol from her pocket. “I hate these things and my boss knows it. He’s just doing it to make me suffer so I might as well enjoy myself.”
Olivia thought for a few minutes and then took the toy from Nora’s hand. “If we get caught, I have a lawyer I can call,” she told the blonde detective with a grin.
“Shouldn’t come to that, I can talk my way out of anything,” Nora said smugly as she rose from her seat. “Come on, I think we can get a better shot at the podium from up there,” she said, pointing to the balcony.
The two women quietly slipped away from their seats and made their way towards the stairwell leading to the balcony. Nora led the way and as she climbed the steps, Olivia swore she heard her muttering something about Nikki and payback. Looking up, the New Yorker asked, “Who’s Nikki?”
“My partner who wormed her way out of attending this lovely function with me; she’s probably at the closest sale spending more of our money,” Nora grumbled.
That last comment confused Olivia until the light bulb went off in her head, ‘Partners on the force and off, it has to be with the way she’s griping.’ She thought with a smile as they entered the balcony section.
In the dim lighting, they moved to find a better position when suddenly forms sprung up from in between the rows and they were blasted with streams of water from all directions. Olivia threw up her hands and the water stopped assaulting her but the men continued the attack on Nora until finally one man was left squirting her with his weapon. They stood toe to toe, staring at one another until finally Nora spoke, “You are in so much trouble, Bobby.”
“What? Me…trouble? No, we were told to watch you so there wouldn’t be another incident like last year in Vegas,” He replied smugly.
Nora poked him in the chest with her squirt gun. “That was not my fault Bobby Delaney and you know it!”
“Believe what you like, little sister, Dan just wanted to make sure it didn’t happen again,” he said, moving the poking gun away from his chest.
Nora fumed for a minute and it looked to Olivia as if she was going to give up but then she smiled widely and spoke, “How about you and the boys play a little game of hide and seek with me and Olivia?”
Bobby started to speak but his sister cut him off. “If I’m busy hiding from you then I’m not causing trouble elsewhere,” she pointed out.
Her brother thought for a few seconds and then said, “Fine, but if you get caught by someone else, we haven’t talked today.”
“Deal,” Nora replied.
Olivia watched as Nora’s brother left, followed by the rest of his team. She gave the New Orleans detective a funny look. “So, I take it I’m going to miss my presentation?”
“Nope, I don’t plan on them catching us and we’ll have found them way before then,” Nora told the brunette.
“Ah, what the hell,” Olivia said, throwing her hands up in the air, “it will probably be more fun then waiting with all of those guys and listening to them swap tall tales.”
Nora grinned and thumping Olivia on the shoulder as she walked past her, led the way back down the stair well and the two women soon were off on a little boredom relieving adventure in the convention center.
