After Janet finished with her shift that night she enlisted the help of Teal’c with moving Sam home…under protest from her partner of course but the doctor put her foot down; telling the stubborn woman there was no way she and Vala could get her into the house much less upstairs without causing damage to themselves and her. Sam grudgingly accepted that excuse and kept silent the whole time she was being moved from the infirmary to Janet’s van.
As Sam tried to get comfortable on the back seat Vala appeared in the open doorway; “Here…you forgot this,” she said handing Sam a pillow.
“Thanks,“ replied Sam as she lifted her knee just enough to slide the pillow underneath it; a heavy duffle bag landed in the floorboard and she looked up at the dark-haired woman who was hefting two more large bags to put it behind the bench seat, “Do you have enough stuff?” she said a little sarcastically.
Vala either didn’t recognize the sarcasm or just didn’t pay it any attention as she tossed the bags into the back, “No…but Janet told me to pack just a few bags,” she said, sliding the door closed she then climbed into the passenger seat to wait on the doctor.
“But did you leave anything in your room?” Sam asked in a serious tone.
“A few things,” Vala remarked as Janet climbed into the driver’s seat.
“Are you okay back there?” the doctor asked looking over her shoulder.
“Just wonderful,” grunted Sam.
“Quick Janet…I think she’s turning into an ass; that’s the second sarcastic remark she’s made in the last five minutes, we’d better get her home,” Vala told the doctor but she glanced over her shoulder towards Sam and winked.
“Ha ha,” was Sam’s reply as Janet laughed and started the van.
A short time later they pulled into the driveway of the couple’s house where Teal’c already stood waiting on the porch. He walked out to meet them as Vala jumped out of the van and opened the side door.
“Watch it big fella, she might bite,” Vala joked, which earned her a grumbled growl from Sam.
“Just get me in the damn house,” the blonde muttered loudly; her pain medication was wearing off and the ride home though short had made her knee begin to throb.
“I shall attempt to make the transition as smooth as possible Samantha,” Teal’c stated as he helped her to move forward and then picked her up in his strong arms.
Janet stood on the porch having gone to open the door and turn on the house lights, as the large Jaffa carried Sam up the front steps she told him, “Just carry her upstairs Teal’c to the first door on the left, I’ll be right behind you.”
“Very well Dr. Fraiser,” he stated maneuvering through the doorway.
Vala followed not far behind, lugging her bags all at once and Sam‘s crutches; Janet chuckled, “You could have waited until I had Sam settled and I would have helped you,” she told the woman.
“I’ve got them…besides you might need my help with her,” Vala said walking into the house and letting the bags fall on the floor near the door, “I can move them later,” she added and the two women followed Teal’c who was carefully walking up the stairs with his friend.
Following the Jaffa into their room Janet slipped past him to pull down the covers of the bed and Teal’c carefully set the blonde woman down. Janet noticed the tight set to her jaw and turning to Vala who stood in the doorway spoke, “Look in the hall closet and grab those extra pillows would you.”
Vala nodded, setting the crutches down inside the doorway she backed out of the room to fetch the requested items leaving Janet and Teal’c alone with Sam who spoke up, “Thanks Teal’c…you can head back to the base now.”
Teal’c glanced towards Janet who nodded, “Very well Samantha, I shall visit you in a few days perhaps,” he said.
“Sounds great…bye,” Sam replied, her tone a little short.
Janet walked with Teal’c to the doorway where Vala re-appeared with several large pillows, “You help get her settled and I’ll be right back after I show Teal’c out,” the doctor said as she led the large man out the bedroom door.
Vala strolled over to the bed and stood there holding the pillows, “Where do you want these?” she asked Sam.
“Give me one and put the other two under my leg…be careful,” Sam told her as Vala began to lift the injured limb.
“Of course,” Vala remarked and maneuvered the pillows under the knee and lower leg, giving them some support.
Janet came back into the room carrying her medical bag, “When did the medication wear off?” she asked walking up to the bed to stand beside Vala.
“On the way home, “ grumbled Sam.
“Shot or pills?” Janet asked as she set the bag on the nightstand and rummaged in it.
“Shot please…it will last longer,” Sam told her.
“I’m going to move my things, “ Vala said and began to turn away.
Readying a shot of morphine, Janet spoke, “Wait a minute and I’ll help you,” she told the woman and then looked at Sam, “Ready?”
Sam rolled over a little and Janet pulled down the scrub bottoms she wore enough to administer the shot. Sam moved back and the doctor fussed over her some, making sure she was comfortable then giving her a light kiss stood up, “How’s that?” she asked her partner.
“I’m fine... help Vala,” Sam told her.
Janet turned to face Vala, “Okay let’s get you settled in;” she looked back at Sam, “I’ll be back shortly.”
Sam made a shooing motion with her hands, “Go….show her around the house, I‘m not going anywhere,” she said with a goofy grin as the shot began to hit her and she settled back into the pillows, watching as the two women left the room.
Returning downstairs Janet helped Vala bring her bags up, leading her to Cassie’s old room, “You’ll be staying in here since Cass is away at school,” the doctor told her.
Looking around the room, Vala noticed a picture of the small family on the desk and picked it up, “I forgot you two have a daughter, she’s pretty.”
Janet walked over to stand beside her, “Sam jokes she takes after me in that department, you’ll have to get her to tell you how we came to adopt her while you’re here,” she told the dark-haired woman.
“If it’s anything like some of her stories I bet its exciting,” Vala remarked.
“Very,” Janet replied as she moved over to the dresser, checking to see if there was enough space for Vala’s things in the drawers, “you should have enough drawer space…Cass took most of her clothes with her.”
“I can just live out of my bags,” Vala told her.
Janet gave her one of the patented looks reserved for Sam and crossed her arms then spoke, “You’re going to be here for a month at least or longer…please make yourself at home Vala.”
Ducking her head Vala replied in a soft voice, “Okay…I will.”
“Good…now you can unpack later, let’s head downstairs and I’ll refresh your memory on the layout…we really didn’t give you the full tour this past weekend,” Janet said moving towards the door.
“I seem to recall we spent most of that time in the bedroom,“ Vala replied with a crooked grin at the doctor.
Janet felt her cheeks burn, clearing her throat she spoke, ”Umm…yes we did…come on then,” and she moved out of the room rather quickly.
Chuckling softly at the doctor’s reaction Vala followed her out of the room, ‘She’s so cute when she’s flustered,’ she thought with a grin.
Janet paused to look in on Sam and saw that she was sleeping now, moving on past their bedroom she walked down the stairs, followed closely by Vala. Showing the woman around downstairs Janet made sure to remind her she was to make herself at home…she was free to use anything in the house; books, movies…whatever she wanted. Walking into the garage she rummaged around in a drawer and found what she searched for…two walkie talkies.
She turned to Vala, “I’m going to put one of these in the bedroom and you keep the other with you, it’ll save Sam from having to yell if she needs anything and let you roam around the house when you want to,” the doctor told her, handing Vala one of the radios.
“Good idea,” Vala remarked and stuck the radio in her pocket.
The two women walked back into the house and Janet led their friend into the kitchen, “Are you hungry?”
“A little…I could use a snack,” Vala said taking a seat on one of the stools.
“Okay…sandwiches coming up…this will also let me show you where everything is. If I had more time I’d fix the two of you some meals to heat up but I guess you can order something when I’m not home,” Janet told her as she rummaged through the fridge.
“Sam really doesn’t cook does she?” Vala asked.
“She can cook…but it’s probably safer to order something,“ Janet told her with a grin as she began to prepare the sandwiches.
“Really? I hear a story in there somewhere,“ Vala remarked.
Janet laughed, “Many stories actually,” and as she fixed them something to eat she began regaling Vala with some of Sam’s more disastrous but funny attempts at cooking.
After Vala finished laughing following a tale about burnt pasta she spoke, “Don’t worry…I’ll be sure to keep her clear of the kitchen but we won’t have to order, I can cook you know.”
“Really…I didn’t know this,” Janet said giving her a questioning look.
“Oh yes…I did learn a few things in my travels…feeding ones self scores high on the list of things to learn quickly,” Vala replied with a smile, “I just haven’t had the chance to do much experimenting with Earth foods yet…they wouldn’t let me hang around in the kitchen on the base.”
“Well in that case I have several cookbooks you can use and if you have any questions about measurements or anything Sam can help; she’s really good at following instructions…most of the time,“ Janet told her; “Before I leave for work in the morning I’ll make a grocery list and call it in to be delivered, that way you won’t have to worry about running out of anything since it’ll probably be late whenever I come home,” she added, clearing away their plates.
“Sounds good…so…is there anything I need to know medical wise as to Sam’s care?” Vala asked.
“Well I already told her she’s not to move around for a couple of days, the only exception being showers and bathroom visits, you‘ll have to wrap the knee to keep it from getting wet; I’ll leave her pain medication with you and you can follow the instructions as to when to give it to her but she might try to talk you into extras…don’t give them to her, even if she whines. The meds are strong enough but she gets a little impatient waiting for them to kick in…that’s why she asked for a shot earlier,” Janet explained.
Vala nodded, “I’ll be prepared for that…anything else?”
“Just get ready for her to try and talk you into letting her out of the bed; she’s made it an art form. I’ll make sure she has her laptop and movies close by but she’ll still claim boredom…other than that you shouldn’t have anything else to worry about; just try and keep your own self from getting bored,” Janet told her.
“I’m sure I can keep myself occupied,” Vala replied as she stretched her arms over her head and then covered her mouth to hide a yawn.
“Oh I’m fighting those too, it’s been a long day,” Janet said with a smile, “in fact I think I’m going to take a shower and turn in. You’re welcome to watch TV or something if you want to.”
“No…I think I’ll unpack my things and then go to bed myself,” Vala replied.
With that said the two women straightened up the kitchen and then made their way back upstairs. Janet told the dark-haired woman good night as she stopped at her bedroom door, with a wave to the doctor Vala continued down the hall to her new room, closing the door behind her after she entered.
****************
Walking across the bedroom to the dresser Janet glanced at the bed, Sam was still sleeping; quietly she gathered her sleep clothes and walked into the bathroom to get cleaned up. A short time later she exited to find Sam awake and watching her walk out of the bathroom.
“Well hello…I didn’t think you’d be awake anytime soon after that shot,” the doctor said as she walked over to sit on the edge of the bed.
“I was only dozing…I heard you come in,” Sam told her.
“How’s the knee?” Janet asked.
“Fine…pain’s not so bad; did you get Vala settled in?” Sam said as she shifted her body some.
“Yes…all settled,” Janet replied as she helped Sam get more comfortable.
“What time do you have to go in tomorrow?” the blonde asked the doctor.
“Five in the morning,“ Janet said with a sigh, “I’m not looking forward to spending so much time away from you while you recover.”
“I’ll be fine, it’s the reason Vala is here…well one of the reasons,” Sam replied with a small grin.
“You have to promise me you won’t pester her about that Samantha,” Janet scolded, “let her figure it out on her own please.”
“Okay…I promise…no pestering Vala about her feelings,” Sam said crossing her heart with her finger and smiling at her partner.
“Why do I think you have something else planned in that pretty head of yours,” Janet remarked with a smirk.
“Oh come on…I’ll behave,” Sam told her, “Now…gimme a kiss and get some rest…it’s getting late.”
Janet leaned forward giving her partner a soft kiss on the lips and then pulling away spoke, “I still think you’re up to something.”
Sam settled back on her pillow, “Nah…now sleep,” she said closing her eyes.
Janet gave her unseeing partner an odd look and sighed, reaching over she turned off the bedside lamp then carefully settled herself in the bed, trying to position her body to where she wouldn’t bump into Sam’s leg during the night. After several moments she began to toss and turn; a sleepy voice spoke up, “What are you doing?”
“Trying to get comfortable,” Janet muttered.
The bed continued to move as Janet tried to find a comfortable position to sleep in, finally she groaned, ”I’m used to sleeping against your right side.”
“Well come get on the other side and I’ll move over,” Sam said.
“Won’t work…I can’t sleep on my right side remember, “ Janet said softly.
Sam sighed, having to remember the shot that almost took Janet away from her was something she didn’t like, “I have an idea.”
Janet rose up on her elbow, “What?” she asked looking down at her partner.
“Go sleep with Vala,” Sam stated, opening her eyes to look up at Janet.
“What?” Janet asked her voice pitched a little higher.
“You heard me…go sleep with Vala; Cassie’s bed is big enough for two people,” Sam told her.
The doctor saw the serious look on her partner’s face, lit by the faint light from the streetlamps coming through the window, “You’re serious aren’t you?”
“Yup…you need your sleep and you’re not going to get it in here with me as long as you can’t get comfortable…now go,” Sam replied.
Janet thought for few minutes, “Okay…but you use the radio if you need anything…Vala has the other one with her,” she finally said, moving to get out of bed.
“Don’t worry I will,” Sam told her closing her eyes again and a small grin appeared on her face, “sleep tight,” she added as she heard footsteps walk away from the bed.
Janet turned to look at her partner before walking out of the door, “I think you planned this,” she said; a chuckle was heard from the bed’s direction along with a “Nope,” from Sam, shaking her head Janet walked out of the bedroom and down the hall.
************************
After unpacking her bags and changing clothes Vala browsed through a shelf of books on one side of the room, finding an interesting prospect she pulled it out and then climbed into bed to begin reading.
She was making nice headway into the novel when a soft knock sounded on the door, looking up she called out, “Come in.”
The door opened and Janet stepped into the room, “Can I sleep with you?” she asked.
Vala raised her eyebrows at the question, “Why?”
Janet fidgeted slightly and Vala tried not to laugh, ‘Oh that’s so cute too’, she thought and then asked again, “Well?”
Moving closer to the bed Janet replied, “I can’t sleep on my right side and I can’t sleep on the left because I might hit Sam’s knee and I’m used to sleeping up close to her,” the response came out in a quick babbled rush, “so she told me to come sleep with you…if that’s okay.”
Vala thought for a few moments, which made Janet fidget even more then with a grin she patted the bed, “Come on,” she told the doctor.
“Thank you,” Janet said to her as she climbed into the bed to lay on Vala’s right side.
“Does this mean I get to cuddle with you?” Vala asked with a crooked smile.
“It means you get to be my body pillow and I need to go to sleep now,” Janet replied crawling under the covers.
“Sounds good to me,” remarked Vala as she marked her place in the book and put it down on the bedside table.
“You can read if you want, it won’t bother me,” Janet told her as she settled into the bed.
“I can read tomorrow…you need your rest,” the dark-haired woman said as she turned off the small lamp and settled down in the bed next to Janet.
Moving closer, Janet laid her head on taller woman’s shoulder, “Is this okay?”
“You’re fine…sleep,” Vala commented, closing her eyes and trying to ignore her body’s reactions to the small body close to hers’.
“Alright…oh where’s the radio?” Janet asked.
“On the table next to me…with the volume turned up loud too,” Vala replied.
“Okay…night,” was Janet’s reply as she closed her eyes, trying to fall asleep as quickly as possible.
“Night,” was the soft reply from Vala and the two women went silent as they tried to go to sleep.
After several minutes of quiet, their breathing slowly evened out as they relaxed and drifted off to sleep, the smaller body of the doctor snuggled close to Vala’s larger frame.
******************************
“Oh Jannnnettt.”
“Hey…Janet…Vala?”
“Janet it’s time for you to get up or you’ll be late for work.”
Vala opened her eyes finally, reaching over she picked up the radio from the table, “Will you shut up…some people are trying to sleep,” she muttered, responding to Sam’s voice.
“Stop cuddling with my woman and wake her up…it’s time for her to get ready for work,” Sam’s voice came over the radio again.
“Her not me,” Vala said into the radio a she nudged the woman lying next to her side, “Janet…Janet…wake up.”
Janet grumbled something Vala couldn’t make out but didn’t wake up which caused Vala to click the radio on again, “She’s not waking up Sam.”
“Damn…she must have been more tired then she let on last night; okay here’s what you need to do,” Sam answered and explained to Vala her method of waking the doctor.
“Sam…are you sure you want me to do that?” Vala asked into the radio.
“It’s okay…just do it and hurry up…I need to go to the bathroom and it’s time for another shot,” Sam replied.
Shaking her head, Vala eased her shoulder out from under Janet’s head and rose up on one elbow which gave her a clear view of the doctor’s outstretched neck, she leaned forward and began placing soft kisses along the side of said body part.
Janet stirred in her sleep, letting out a soft groan as Vala’s lips trailed up along her neck to end up close to her jaw; the doctor reached a hand up to cup the back of the woman’s head as she turned her head to capture the lips tormenting her in a sleepy kiss. After a couple of minutes of kissing her eyes popped open and she pulled away, “Umm…hi,” she said shyly.
“Hi,” Vala replied with a crooked grin, “Sam needs you in the bedroom and its time for you to get ready for work,” she added rolling away from Janet.
Wiping the sleep from her eyes Janet cleared her throat, “Why didn’t you just shake me?”
“Tried that…didn’t work, “ Vala replied a she lay back down and closed her eyes, a small smile on her face.
The radio came to life again, “Hey Vala…did it work? Is she awake yet?”
Janet reached across Vala’s body to pick up the radio, “Yes, I’m up…be right there,” she said into it.
Climbing out of the bed Janet walked to the door and turning around she spoke, “If I need you I’ll call,” she told Vala.
With a sleepy mumble and a wave Vala then turned over in the bed, pulling the covers over her head. Janet shook her head and walked out the door, making her way to their bedroom where she found Sam sitting up in the bed; she shook her finger at her partner, “That was not fair,” she scolded.
“It woke you up didn’t it?” Sam grinned and then grimaced, “umm…I need a shot but I think I need to go to the bathroom worse,” she told the doctor.
Janet grabbed the crutches from beside the door and carried them over to the bed, “Want me to help you?”
“No actually all I needed was the crutches but you needed to get up or you would be late for work…you forgot to take the alarm with you,” Sam said, moving her legs off the bed and using the crutches to pull herself up.
Janet watched as she hobbled her way towards the bathroom, “I’ll get your shot ready,” she told her retreating partner who replied with an “okay.”
Walking over to the dresser Janet opened her little black bag and readied another shot for Sam, “You know you’ll have to take the pills during the day and when I’m not here right?” she said loud enough for Sam to hear her.
“I know,” was the reply from the bathroom and then she heard a few grumbled curses; “You okay in there?” she asked.
“Just fine,” was the reply.
Laying the syringe down Janet moved to the closet to get her uniform for the day ready, pulling out the selected items she lay them on the bed and then turned back to rummage through a dresser drawer. While she did this Sam hobbled out of the bathroom and moved to stand behind her, using the crutches for support she pulled Janet close to her body then with a kiss to the side of her neck said, “Good morning.”
“Morning to you too,“ Janet said as she turned in her partner’s grip and threaded her arms around the taller woman‘s waist.
Sam grinned, ducking her head down to place a kiss on Janet’s lips, as she did this the doctor took the opportunity to tug down the bottoms Sam wore and with a swift movement jabbed the needle into the flesh beneath the material.
“Oww,” Sam whined as she broke the kiss, “no fair…you could have let me finish kissing you.”
“Think of it as payback for telling Vala how to wake me up you sneaky woman,” Janet replied with a crooked grin, “now…back in the bed with you.”
Sam growled but a stern look from her partner silenced it and she moved away to hobble back over to her side of the bed, sitting down she lay the crutches on the floor and then moved her legs up onto the bed. She watched as Janet began to change out of her pajamas, “So…did you sleep well?” she asked the doctor.
“It was okay,” Janet told her, “she doesn’t move as much as you do,” she added, sticking her tongue out at Sam.
“Oh…I’m hurt, “ Sam gasped, grabbing her chest but she smiled at her partner.
Janet stopped getting dressed for a moment, “But I’m sure I would have slept better if you were there too,” she told her smiling partner.
“Baby steps Jan…baby steps; give me a couple of days and you can sleep in here with me again, I should be able to handle the bumping by then,” Sam told her.
Pulling on her skirt Janet looked towards the bed, “Is this part of your little plan? Me spending my nights home in bed with her?”
“Well…maybe, I think the more time we spend around her the sooner she might admit to a few things; sharing the bed with her is just a way to make her more comfortable…although we had no problems with that this past weekend…did we?” Sam replied.
“No…it was nice actually, I was very comfortable sleeping with the both of you,” Janet said as she put on her uniform top.
“Good then…now if you’ll excuse me I feel the need to sleep again,“ Sam said as she yawned.
“Yes…get some more rest, I have a grocery list to make and then it’s off to work for me,” the doctor said walking over to place a kiss on Sam’s lips as she settled back down in the bed, “I’ll call and check-up on the two of you throughout the day but do me a favor…try and go easy on her okay?”
“Yes Ma’am…I’ll behave,” Sam said looking up at her with a goofy grin and then she closed her eyes as the pain medication began to kick in.
Janet smiled at her sleeping partner, she pulled the bed covers over the woman, tucking them around her and then turned away to finish readying for work.
After finishing with her morning preparations the doctor made her way downstairs where she poured a cup of coffee from the waiting pot, bless pre-set timers she thought as she picked up the notepad from the bar and began making a list of things they would need for the following week. Once her list and her first cup of coffee were finished she made her way back upstairs to grab her purse and jacket. Sam was sleeping soundly now and Janet placed a kiss on her forehead before leaving the room; she walked out and down the hallway to let Vala know she was leaving.
Opening the door she saw that the woman still rested with her head under the covers, chuckling softly she walked over to stand next to the bed and pulled the bedspread back, revealing the mussed up head of the sleeping woman.
“Vala…hey…wake up,” she said softly, shaking her shoulder.
Vala grumbled but opened her eyes and with a sleepy smile spoke, ”Hey…you leaving for work now?”
“Yes…she’s all yours, call me if you need anything or even if you just need to talk,” Janet told her, brushing a strand of dark hair out of the woman’s eyes.
“Okay,” Vala replied and as Janet turned to leave she grabbed her hand, pulling the doctor back to her; “C’mere,” she said in a sleepy tone.
Janet let her friend pull her down until their faces were inches apart and Vala rose up, placing a kiss on her lips, “Have a good day,” she said and then lay back down letting Janet stand up.
The doctor then watched as Vala rolled over, pulling the bedspread back over her head and went back to sleep. Smiling down at the lump under the covers Janet turned to walk away, ‘Maybe this will work out okay,’ she thought as she left the room to go to work.
