okay by my time it's still your birthday...so here's a little ficlet for you..you asked for Jack and Daniel being themselves...so here ya go..hope ya like it.
Daniel adjusted the lamp and leaned in closer to the ancient tome; after discovering the text off world, he had brought it back to the SGC to study further. So engrossed in the reading he didn’t hear the footsteps walk into his lab or feel the presence of someone looking over his shoulder.
“Whatcha ya got there Danny?”
Jumping at the sound of the voice right next to his ear, Daniel turned his head to find Jack less than five inches from him, leaning over his shoulder.
“It’s one of the books I found on P4X-939; it’s fascinating actually…did you know that these people worshiped aquatic creatures?”
Jack rocked back on his heels and quirked an eyebrow at his friend, “Oh really? They worshiped fish huh? Sounds like my kind of people.”
“No Jack…not just fish all aquatic life forms…anything that lived in the water or spent a lot of time in it…otters…beavers…hippopotami…whales…all kinds of life forms,” Daniel began as he launched into lecture mode.
While Daniel babbled on about the society’s religious beliefs Jack wandered over to the shelves lining the wall which were filled with all sorts of artifacts from the archeologist’s many trips off world; he picked up a small box and began to open it.
“But they mainly worshipped fish right?” He asked as he opened the box and peered into it.
“Okay yes…they did and put that down please,” Daniel said when he noticed the object in the man’s hand.
Jack gave him confused look, ”Why?”
“Because it’s over five thousand years old and you might break it that’s why,” Daniel replied.
“This little thing… It looks like the box you gave me for Christmas last year,” Jack said eyeing his friend.
”It was a reproduction, “ Daniel replied.
“Oh…okay,” Jack said shrugging and closed the box, placing it back on the shelf; he nosed around another shelf and picked up another object.
“How old is this?” he asked holding up a little mask.
“Two thousand,” Daniel said.
Jack put it down picking up something else and holding it up gave his friend a questioning look. Daniel told him the age and this continued until finally he sighed, “Jack don’t you have something better to do?”
“Nope…I just thought I’d see what you were up to,” the colonel said as he browsed the shelves.
“So you though you’d come and ask me about everything on my shelves?” asked Daniel, crossing his arms and giving Jack a hard stare.
“Yep,” Jack replied, his back turned to the archeologist.
“Sam kicked you out of her lab already didn’t she?” Daniel asked, a small grin forming on his face.
“Well it wasn’t my fault I didn’t know not to push the button on her newest gizmo,” Jack replied and then turned back to face Daniel.
“You’re hiding from her aren’t you?” Daniel asked his grin now turning into a smile.
“Not hiding…just staying conveniently absent from my well known haunts,” Jack replied fidgeting slightly.
“She’s going to find you eventually,” Daniel said arching an eyebrow at the fidgeting man.
Pulling up a stool, Jack sat across the desk from the archeologist, “I know…but by the time she thinks to look here she’ll have calmed down some; so tell me more about these folks who knew the importance of a good fish,” Jack said, propping his elbows up on the table and giving Daniel a goofy grin.
Shaking his head and chuckling at his friends’ predicament, Daniel began telling Jack more about what he discovered about the culture mentioned in the text.
