The taxi pulled over to the curb and a petite auburn haired woman exited. She stood waiting with the door held open for the other passenger to emerge. Seeing that it was not about to happen anytime soon, she opened her purse, pulling out a few bills she passed them to the driver. While this occurred the other woman in the back of the taxi, slowly inched her way over the seat, until she could get out and stand up. Sighing heavily she closed the taxi door and watched as the vehicle pulled away, back out into the busy New York traffic.
“Why did we stop and get out here?” asked Sam.
“Because I thought just maybe you could work the pout off your face before we walked into the museum,” stated Janet, “so we walk the rest of the way.”
“But we went to art museums in DC on our last trip; I was supposed to get to pick the attractions this time,” whined Sam.
Janet shot her a look, raising an eyebrow, “You so need to stop with the whining; I told you last time it didn’t suit you,” she replied, not answering her partner’s comment.
Janet then moved closer to Sam and began patting her down, “Hey! What are you doing?” Sam said, trying to swat away the doctor’s hands.
“Looking for…this,” she told her, as she pulled the I-pod out of the jacket pocket and put it in her purse.
Sam grumbled, but did not try to take the player back. Janet began walking away, leaving her no choice but to follow or be left looking like an idiot, pouting on the sidewalk. She caught up with the fast moving doctor after a few long strides, walking a foot behind her.
Janet looked over her shoulder but kept walking, “If you’d stop acting like a five year old and more like an adult we just might do some of the things you picked out,” she said speaking loudly so Sam could hear her over the city’s noises.
Sam took a couple of quick steps until she was beside her partner, “Horseback riding in Central Park?” she asked, catching Janet’s attention.
“Just maybe if yo….” Janet did not get to finish the sentence as a man ran into them, pushing them apart. Stumbling to the side Sam quickly righted herself and moved to help Janet up from the sidewalk where the man’s shove sent her.
“Are you okay?” she asked.
“I’m fine,” replied the doctor, brushing herself off; that was when she realized she was missing something, “Sam he took my purse!”
“Oh crap…stay here,” Sam muttered, taking off at a run in the direction the man went.
Janet yelled, “Sam!” but it was no use her long-legged partner was already half-way down the sidewalk; shaking her head the doctor took off after her.
Sam ran down the sidewalk, trying to see if she could spot the man, jumping up on a newspaper dispenser she peered over the crowd of pedestrians. She made out the running figure and as luck would have it, she saw him stop and lean against a building. She jumped down and started running again.
‘Stupid idiot thinks he’s getting away clean,’ she thought dodging people on the sidewalk. As she grew closer to the man, he spotted her running figure and took off again, with Sam in close pursuit.
The man tried to slow her down by running through crowds of people but Sam weaved her way past them and kept after him. They reached a less congested piece of sidewalk and Sam began to catch up until he pulled a trashcan over, throwing it in her path. She tried to hurdle it but caught her foot and stumbled catching herself before hitting the ground. Looking up she saw him run around a corner and took off after him again.
Rounding the corner she found a body in her way, unable to stop she plowed into it, twisting her body she hit the ground with the stranger in her arms, cushioning their fall.
Sam looked up into blue eyes framed by a pair of black-rimmed glasses, “Ummm….sorry,” she said to the blonde-haired woman lying on top of her.
“It‘s alright…accidents happen,” the blonde-haired woman replied.
“Oh crap…can you get up? I was kinda chasing somebody,” Sam asked.
The blonde-haired woman pushed herself up into a crouch and then stood, she reached a hand down offering it to Sam; taking the hand Sam pulled herself up from the sidewalk.
“I don’t think you will have to worry about the chasing someone part, “ the blonde said pointing up the sidewalk.
Sam looked to where she was pointing and saw a dark haired woman kneeling on the back of the man she had been chasing; “Yes!” she exclaimed and ran up to where they were.
Janet rounded the corner at that moment, almost colliding with the same woman Sam had but stopped in time; she stood bent over trying to catch her breath.
“Are you okay?” the woman asked.
Catching her breath Janet replied, “Yeah…fine…just a little winded, you didn’t by any chance see a tall short haired blonde run by here did you?”
“Oh we met; is that her?” she said pointing to where Sam now stood talking to another woman who was kneeling on the ground next to the man who grabbed her purse.
“Yeah…that’s her, did she catch him?” Janet asked.
“Actually my girlfriend did; I’m Alex Cabot by the way,” the blond woman said.
“Janet Fraiser…nice to meet you,” the doctor replied holding out her hand, which Alex shook.
Meanwhile up the sidewalk, Sam reached down, picking up Janet’s purse, “Hey… nice catch, I think I chased him for a block,” she told the dark haired woman. That was when she realized the guy had not moved yet because he was in handcuffs.
“No problem…knew there had to be reason he was hauling ass, “ the woman replied grinning.
“You’re a cop?” asked Sam.
“Olivia Benson, NYPD,” she replied holding her hand out.
Sam took it, helping her up from the sidewalk, “Sam Carter, USAF.”
Sam looked back towards the blonde-haired woman she ran into and saw her partner standing beside her, she held up the purse, giving Janet a smile.
Olivia pulled out her cell phone and make a quick call, hanging up the phone she looked at Sam, “They’re sending a uniform to pick this guy up, if you want to press charges you’ll have to go the station with them,” she told her.
The man began to roll around trying to get up but Olivia put a foot on his back, “Stay still,” she ordered and the man stopped his squirming.
By this time, Alex and Janet walked up to stand by the trio. Sam handed her the purse and Janet looked through it to make sure everything was there, clearing her throat she held out her hand to Sam. Sighing, Sam pulled the player out of her pocket, giving it back to Janet; she shrugged, “I tried.”
Olivia and Alex looked at one another and grinned. Introductions were soon made again and the four waited on the police car to arrive, making small talk until it happened. By the time, the car showed up, Alex decided that they would go back to the station with the pair and wait on them to file a complaint; then the four would grab some lunch together. Olivia hailed a taxi and the four women followed the cruiser to the nearest station, where with the detective pulling a few strings they finished filing the complaint in record time.
With that taken care of, the four left the station, deciding to walk to a nearby bistro, recommended by Olivia, for lunch. Strolling down the sidewalk the couples split up with Janet alongside Alex, while Sam walked next to Olivia.
Sam walked with her hands in her jacket pockets, glancing over at the woman next to her she asked, “So…you and Alex…” she let the question hang.
“Yes…me and Alex,” Olivia replied, “going on four years. You and Janet?”
Sam nodded, “Almost five years now,” she replied.
“But you’re in the Air Force,” Olivia said giving her a confused look.
“They never asked and we never told,“ Sam said grinning, “our close friends know, but we try and stay completely professional when we go to work.”
“So Janet’s Air Force too?” the detective asked.
“Yep…CMO at the base we’re stationed at in Colorado,” Sam said, seeing the pair in front of them growing distant, “hey…they’re out walking us.”
A similar conversation took place between the two walking ahead of their partners, but with a few more questions thrown in from Alex.
“So what brings the two of you to New York?” the lawyer asked.
“We both had some leave time saved up and decided to take a little vacation, do some sight-seeing...touristy stuff,” Janet replied.
Alex laughed shaking her head, “Not exactly the best way to be welcomed to our lovely city then, “ she said.
“Well…no, but it’s part of traveling to big cities I guess,” mused Janet.
“I take it where you're from is more subdued?” asked Alex.
“There’s no place more laid back then Colorado Springs,” Janet said grinning at the taller woman, “well…the town that is.”
Alex gave her a confused look but Janet just ignored it; not wanting to have to explain things she wasn’t supposed to anyway.
Janet was saved from having to do that by the arrival of the two following them; Sam grabbed a hold of Janet’s hand and Olivia slipped an arm around Alex’s waist, joining their partners.
Janet, glanced up at Sam’s face, and then bumped her shoulder into her partner. Sam looked down, giving her a smile. “You feel okay? No ill effects from that run?” the doctor asked, it was well over a month since Sam’s return from PX4-346 and while she regained most of the weight she had lost, Janet still fussed over her.
“Yeah…I’m fine, getting hungry though,” she said this loud enough that Olivia heard her.
“The bistro is just up ahead Sam,” remarked the detective.
They soon arrived at the eatery, several tables set outside the bistro and Alex picked one out; she and Janet took a seat while the other two stood.
“So you want your usual, “ Olivia asked.
“Yes please, “Alex said to her with a smile.
Sam looked down at Janet, “What do you feel like?”
Janet shrugged, “Surprise me…you know what I like,” she replied.
“Okie dokie,” Sam said with a silly grin and leant down giving her a quick kiss.
Olivia could not help but smile at the two; grabbing hold of Sam’s elbow she pulled her towards the entrance, right before they entered Alex called out, “Bring me back extra pickles Liv.” The detective nodded and went in to order their food with Sam close behind, leaving Alex and Janet to sit and make small talk again.
“Okay...I’m curious about something,“ began Alex, “what was with the handing over of the I-pod?” she asked Janet.
Janet grinned, “The last time I took Sam to an art museum was in DC when I was there for a medical conference; she had the player on the entire time we were walking through the exhibits, this time I was making sure she listened while I talked,” she replied.
Alex laughed, “Sneaky…Liv did that once, but it was during the opera,” she stated, “she actually likes museums though.”
“Oh Sam likes them too, she’s just into the more technical exhibits than art,” commented Janet.
Inside the bistro the other two women waited as their orders were filled, Sam looked out the window to see the two at the table laughing; she nudged the detective, “Hey…how much you want to bet they're talking about us.”
“Oh they probably are,” Olivia said with a grin.
Sam grinned back, “So…Liv huh?” she asked.
“Yeah it’s what my close friends call me; I’m guessing Sam is short for Samantha right?” she said with a questioning look.
“Yeah…the only people that use it though are my Dad and Janet…when I’m in trouble,” she replied with a slight blush.
“Ahhh…troublemaker huh? Guess it was a good thing you bumped into us then; I‘d hate to see what would have happened if you had actually caught that guy,“ commented Liv.
“Oh I wouldn’t have hurt him…much,” replied Sam to the comment.
The conversation stopped there as their food order number came up; gathering the items, they ventured back outside to join the other two. Setting the food before the waiting woman they sat down beside their respective partners.
“Did you get enough?” Janet asked when she saw the huge sandwich Sam ordered.
“I’m still trying to bulk back up, besides I’m probably gonna need it for whatever you have planned today,” her partner replied, flashing the doctor a smile.
Alex and Liv looked at one another when Sam made the bulking up comment, Liv shrugged and picked up her sandwich, taking a bite.
While they ate, the four carried on bits and pieces of conversation, learning more about each other. When finished eating they set back enjoying the fresh air, letting their food settle.
“So Sam…what exactly do you do in the Air Force?” asked Liv.
“Astrophysicist…working with deep space radar telemetry,“ she replied.
“Ahh…boring desk job huh?” the detective said.
Sam glanced over at Janet, “Actually…there’s more grunt work involved then you would think,” she said with a small half-smile.
Alex saw the glance and couldn’t help but ask, ”Okay what was that look for?”
Janet gave her a confused look, “What look?”
“The one Sam just threw you,” Liv said, growing curious now as well.
“We would tell you but then I’d have to borrow your gun and shoot you,” Sam said smiling at Liv and then said, “ow” because of the pinch Janet gave her.
“You two are hiding something, I’m a lawyer and she’s a cop; we’re very good at reading body language, “ Alex interjected.
“Really…we can’t talk about it; so do you know about the exhibits currently running at the Guggenheim?” Janet asked changing the subject.
Alex and Liv looked at each other; Liv raised an eyebrow at her partner who just shook her head. If the two women could not talk about what they really did then they would not push at least not right now.
While Alex told Janet about the different art exhibits at various museums Sam looked over at Liv, “So…you two have to let us take you to dinner tonight. I still owe you for catching that guy and for knocking Alex down,” Sam told her.
Alex heard the statement and interjected, “No it’s okay, besides you broke my fall,” she said smiling at Sam.
“Fall? You didn’t tell me you fell Sam,” Janet said when she heard Alex’s reply.
“It was nothing, didn’t even put a dent in me,” Sam told her worried partner, she glanced over at the lawyer, “and I insist Alex.”
“Fine then…if you insist,” the lawyer replied, she dug around in her pocket and pulled out a business card, “give us a call after you finish for the day.” Handing Janet the card she smiled at the two, “But you have to let me pick the restaurant.”
“Deal,” said Sam.
They gathered up their trash and disposed of it, then stood making their goodbyes with promises to call later. Waving at the two, Sam and Janet linked arms and began walking away, leaving the detective and her partner to watch as they disappeared down the crowded sidewalk.
“I like them,” stated Liv.
“I know, they’re such a cute couple, can’t wait to have dinner with them,” supplied Alex as she slipped an arm around Liv’s waist.
“You just want to have another chance to ask questions again,“ Liv said pulling her close.
“Like you don’t either besides I’m curious, I want to know what they really do,” she replied, giving Liv a quick kiss.
“Yeah your right…I do,” grinned Liv, “maybe we can tag team them tonight and find out.”
“Oh sounds like a good plan; come on let’s go shopping, you’re going to need a new dress for tonight,” remarked Alex tugging on her partner’s waist.
“Alllex…” whined Liv but followed along with the tug.
Alex threw her head back laughing at the look on Liv’s face but just kept on walking; they had shopping to do.
