merfilly another Halloween fic so here it is..*giggle*
Janet watched from the back door as the group of girls played in flickering light cast by the campfire. Cassie convinced her new mother to let her have a slumber party the night before Halloween. Knowing that the young girl just wanted to fit in and make new friends Janet said all right.
Sighing Janet thought, ‘I don’t know whose the bigger kid though…Sam’s having just as much fun as the girls are.’ She laughed loudly as she watched her partner jump out from behind a tree, causing the girls to run away from her screaming wildly.
Sam called them all back to the campfire and settled them down. She left the girls waiting as she walked to the deck. Janet opened the door and called out, “What are you up to now?”
Climbing the steps Sam grinned, “Oh just getting them ready for bed,” she replied.
“Samantha…I know that tone; What are you going to do?” asked Janet.
“Just going to tell a little story; nothing scary, I promise,” she said as she walked in the house, “I just need to get the snacks,” she added and then grabbing the bag of marsh mellows from the counter she turned to go back outside.
Janet caught her before she exited, “If you scare them, you get to sleep outside with them,” she told her grinning partner.
“OOOO….sleeping in a tent, like I haven’t done that before,” she quipped, giving Janet a quick kiss and then went to rejoin the girls.
Janet sighed and watched as Sam attached the treats to coat hanger wire, giving each girl one to hold over the fire. She then sat down in the middle of them all and Janet saw her begin to talk, gesturing about with her hands. All the girls soon were captured under her spell as she wove the tale.
Janet grinned and slipped out the door; she crept closer to the group, keeping to the shadows until she could lean against a nearby tree close enough to hear Sam’s story. Sam glanced in her direction but continued talking.
“It was a night not unlike this one; the wind howled through the trees making them creak and groan. I was with a group of friends camping and we gathered around our fire getting ready to sleep. As we settled down for the night a strange noise sounded from the darkness around us.”
Janet grinned as Sam made an awful sound, halfway between a groan and a moan, which caused a couple of the girls to jump.
“The sound kept on until finally we decided to see what it was; splitting up we ventured off into the darkness using our flashlights to guide us. Realizing I was growing closer to the source as the cries became louder; I stopped in front of a dark cave, where the sound seemed to be coming from. I called out…”hellooo” and it echoed from the walls of the cave.
Standing at the entrance I heard my call answered with a faint…”Hellllp meeeee.”
Janet covered her mouth stifling a laugh as she watched Sam’s animated movements, her eyes wide and her hands always moving.
“Well…thinking somebody was in trouble, I slowly crept into the cave; the cry sounded again…”Helllp meeeee….” as I grew closer it stopped and I heard movement behind me….then a low moaning noise. Then suddenly something jumped out of the darkness!”
Sam punctuated the sentence by jumping forward at the girls, they squealed and jumped in their seats.
“Something grabbed onto me and I struggled with it, trying to break free,” she made fighting motions and acted as if she was trying to escape from something, this caused several ooo’s from the group.
“I broke free and ran, reaching the entrance I stumbled falling to the ground,” which she acted out.
“Rolling over, I shown my flash light up into the face of a terrible creature with big big teeth and glowing red eyes; it grabbed my foot and began dragging me back into the cave…..” Sam grew silent, watching the faces of the girls sitting around her.
Finally Cassie spoke up, “Well what happened next? Did you get away?”
Sam grinned, “Nope sure didn’t…in fact…it killed me.”
A chorus of groans answered her comment, followed by several thrown marsh mellows and then Cassie pounced on her, “That was silly Sam!”
Sam laughed, “I never said it was gonna be scary kiddo.”
Janet watched from her vantage point as the group of girls piled on top of Sam who began tickling whomever she could reach. Soon they all collapsed on the ground in a fit of giggles as they realized they could not beat her. Shaking her head and laughing softly Janet walked back to the house to wait on Sam…it looked like she wouldn’t be sleeping in a tent after all.
