Janet motioned for the replicator to follow her as they walked away from Sam’s bedside. Coming to a standstill not far from where Teal’c sat watching the doubles’ every move Janet studied the face of her partner’s twin. Not being able to tell if the replicator was growing tired or not Janet asked, “Do you need a place to recharge or something?”
The replicator smiled, “I am self sufficient; unless damaged my form is capable of seeing to all my needs.”
Janet nodded, that was something Sam would be interested in studying she thought.
“I would like to review the program Sam wrote and attempted to upload before this incident occurred,” the double said to the doctor.
“I sure that is something Sam will take up with the general; but for now I think it best if you stayed away from the base computers,” Janet told her, as yawn formed and she was unable to stop it.
“You grow weary?” asked the double her voice full of concern.
“I’ve been up for almost twenty-four hours, so yes I grow weary,” Janet replied covering another yawn, “now that I know Sam will be fine I plan to get some sleep.”
“Perhaps it would be best if I allow Teal’c to escort me to a cell now,” stated the replicator.
“I was going to suggest you stay here, if that was alright with him. You would be more comfortable in the infirmary than a cell and I believe you’ve shown we can trust you,” Janet remarked grinning at the double, “besides you can keep an eye on Sam…she hates being confined to a bed; you can play watchdog.”
“If this idea is satisfactory with Teal’c I will accept the duty,” the replicator replied with a tilt of her head.
“Wait here and I’ll check with him,” Janet said as she walked over to the large man.
Janet explained her idea to him, looking at the double with a skeptical glance Teal’c nodded but told the doctor he must clear it with General O’Neill first.
Rising from his seat, he walked over to the phone and made a call. Janet moved to stand next to the replicator once more.
Teal’c soon finished the call and moved to stand in front of the two, “General O’Neill has informed me the replicator may stay here but she will be guarded at all times. If she makes any moves that would constitute a threat they will have orders to shoot first and ask questions later, O’Neill’s exact words.”
The replicator nodded, “I would think nothing less of him with that order,” she stated.
“Alright then…you find someplace to sit quietly; I’m going to my office. If Sam needs anything ask a nurse or come get me if you need to,” Janet informed the double as she stifled another yawn. Waving goodbye to the two she left to get some rest.
After Janet left the room, Teal’c and the replicator stared at one another for a few moments until the double bowed her head to him and walked over to a corner, taking a seat on a stool. From this vantage point, she could still keep an eye on Sam along with the entire room.
Teal’c watched her sit quietly, her back ramrod straight as she kept an eye on Colonel Carter. He was still unsure what exactly the replicator was up to but his intuition told him she was hiding something. He was sure O’Neill felt the same way, but was only being easy on the double due to the doctor’s intervention.
He walked over to the open doorway, speaking to the SFs stationed there; informing both, they could leave once their replacements arrived. He then ordered one of them to give up his P-90; once armed with the weapon Teal’c returned to his spot on the bed, where he could still see the replicator in her corner, sitting quietly with eyes closed.
She leaned back against the wall. The first real moment to herself in days, flashes of images rolled across her pathways. First, the look of shock and confusion as she stabbed her double, then they jumped forward to those of a determined doctor bent on repairing the damage to her lover, finally the image of two women foreheads touching, gazing at each other with such love it could be felt.
The images of her invading the SGC no longer haunted her; perhaps with the destruction of Fifth his conditioning no longer affected her. It was either that or she had replaced his form of torture with better images. Many of them were of the love shared by the two women who placed their trust in her. She could not help but feel…yes feel…that she must endeavor to keep that trust.
After all, if she wanted to move closer to the whole purpose of her actions she would need the help of both Sam Carter and Janet Fraiser. She only needed the right moment to discuss this plan with the both of them; but she knew it must wait until Sam recovered more.
She cracked an eye open just enough to see that Teal’c was watching her closely. The Jaffa did not trust her of that she was certain. Perhaps she could still discover a way to gain that trust, if not she would surely have to harm him if it became necessary. She closed her eye once more and tuned her hearing in on Sam’s breathing and heartbeat; she could monitor it much better than the primitive machines surrounding the woman.
She had told an untruth to the small doctor; it was necessary to let her systems rest for maximum proficiency. She thought of this as a weakness, therefore she did not share it with Janet. Sitting in the corner quietly with the steady beat of Sam’s heart pounding in her ears she allowed herself to relax and recharge.
Several hours later the replicator awoke, the beat of Sam’s heart was increasing along with her respiration. Seeing the curtain pulled around the bed she stood to venture closer. She motioned to Teal’c with hands raised before her to show she meant no harm; he nodded but kept his weapon trained on her, as she grew closer to the curtain. Thinking perhaps Janet was finished with her rest period and was checking on her partner the double began to enter the curtain. However, she stopped when voices came from behind it; one of them being Jack O’Neill the other was Sam.
“Carter I don’t care what you could learn from it!” He growled out trying to keep his voice low, “That is a replicator or have you forgotten being chased by thousands of them on Thor’s ship or maybe the little fact of being kidnapped by one! The same one who created that!”
“No Sir, I haven’t forgotten any of that. I’m just saying there is so much we could learn about the replicators from her. There are more of them out there Sir; wouldn’t you like to have a fool proof way of defeating them?” she asked her superior.
“We have a way…you fixed the disruptor,” he stated.
“With her help; but the replicators are assimilating tons of information daily while they war with the Asgard. What if another one was to come up with the same idea Fifth had?” she argued.
Jack started to argue back but held his tongue as she continued; “Besides I have a program all ready that will guarantee she could not harm anyone again.”
“You guarantee it huh?” he asked skeptically.
“Yes Sir,” she assured him.
The replicators’ eyebrows rose at this turn of the conversation; she would definitely need access to this program before allowing an upload.
“Alright Carter, I’ll let you play with your new toy,” he replied.
That remark also caused a response in the replicator; she started to pull back the curtain but stopped as she heard Sam’s answer.
“She is not a toy Jack! Except for the fact she’s composed of chips and components that is me! She has all my memories and feelings, try not to forget that the next time you refer to her as an object!” Sam tried to control her anger as she spoke.
Sensing a rise in Sam’s vitals the replicator pulled back the curtain, causing Jack to jump and spin around, his hand reaching for the sidearm that wasn’t there.
“I apologize for startling you General O’Neill but I believe this conversation is not good for Sam’s well being at the moment,” looking at Sam she asked, ”Do you require me to send for Dr Fraiser?”
“No…I’m fine. Let her sleep; the General was just leaving,” Sam told her as she stared at Jack.
“Yeah…no need to wake the Doc; I think this conversation got as far as it was going…for now anyway, “ he commented staring back at Sam who just nodded.
Easing his way around the replicator, he walked away from the bed and out the door.
“How much of that did you hear?” asked Sam.
The replicator perched on the stool next to Sam’s bed, tilting her head she confessed, “All of it.”
Sam sighed allowing her head to fall back into the pillow, “I wanted to discuss most of that with you privately, not like that.”
“You wish for me to help with the destruction of the others?” the double queried.
“Yes…among other things. I think you could teach me so many things about what actually drives them to do what they do. Maybe we could find another solution other than destroying them,” said Sam, her voice growing weary.
“What of this guarantee you made the General,” the double asked.
“That part was true also but I was going to tell you about the changes. Fifth tried to control you, I would never do that. You’ve shown me you have free will over yourself, I would never take that away; it’s a crucial part of becoming more human,” Sam told her twin.
“Very well…I believe you speak the truth; now you must rest, we have much work to do and this can not be accomplished until you have healed sufficiently,” the replicator stated as she rose from the stool, “I shall be in the corner until you have regained enough strength for a lengthy talk; there is much we must discuss.”
Sam smiled and nodded as the replicator walked away to sit in the corner again; Sam’s last sight before succumbing to sleep once more was that of her own form keeping quiet vigil.
