“Gabrielle! Get down!” the warrior’s voice rang out over the sounds of steel striking steel.

Not even thinking, the bard dropped to one knee as the cry registered and she felt the whoosh of air over her head as a sword stroke missed. Before she could move, the whine of Xena’s chakram passed over her and a gurgling noise sounded from the bandit standing poised to strike down at her.

Twisting around on her knee the blonde witnessed her partner finishing off another foe. Breathing heavily, Gabrielle took in the scene around them. There were at least eight men lying on the ground, several of them still moved but for the most part they lay still. Using her staff to pull herself up from the ground she began walking towards Xena, who was cleaning her sword off on the shirt of the bandit she’d just dispatched.

“You okay?” the warrior asked.

“Yeah, that was close, thanks,” the bard replied.

“Let me grab my medicine kit from Argo and we’ll patch up the guys who are still moving,” Xena said as she turned to walk towards the palomino war horse.

Gabrielle walked quickly to catch up with the warrior. “Why do you do that?” she asked.

Xena stopped and looked down at the young woman beside her. “Why do I do what?” she returned.

“They attack us and then you patch them up. Why not just let them die?” the bard questioned.

Sighing, Xena turned and continued walking towards her horse. “Sometimes it feels better to heal them than kill them,” the warrior said.

Gabrielle paused, allowing Xena to reach Argo alone. She watched the warrior, saw the tired look on her face and a smile began to form on her own. “Xena, why don’t we take a vacation?” she asked as the warrior turned away from the horse with medical bag in hand.

“Vacation?” the warrior snorted a laugh. “If you can find a place where someone’s not trying to take my head off or we have to save someone from villains.”

The bard watched as the warrior continued on with her task. There had to be someplace the two of them could go without being disturbed or have to save someone. She leaned on her staff, her head tilted at an angle as she contemplated places they could go.

“Hello, sweetpea. Do you need my help with something?” a familiar voice asked from behind her.

Gabrielle whirled around to find the goddess of love herself sitting on a long couch, her bevy of muscled menservants standing around; some held fans while others waited with drink and food. The bard smiled broadly at the goddess and remarked, “You’re just the person I needed to talk with.”

The pink bikini clad goddess grinned. “I know of the perfect spot for the two of you to get away,” she said.

“I’ll go tell Xena…” Gabrielle began but Aphrodite stopped her.

“You just get Argo and then go hold onto Xena; I’ll take care of these ruffians,” the goddess told her.

“I don’t know, Dite. I think I need to talk it over with her first,” Gabrielle said in a worried tone.

“Nonsense, once she sees where I’m sending you she’ll forget all about my helping her,” Aphrodite said with a shrug of her shoulders.

Gabrielle thought hard for a few minutes and then nodded. She made her way over to Argo and gathering up the reins, led the war horse over to where Xena worked on one of the bandits. “Xena, can you come here for a second,” she called out.

Looking up, the warrior gave the bard a confused look. “What’s wrong?” she asked.

Gabrielle thought quick and replied, “Argo is limping.”
Forgetting about the wounded bandit, Xena rose from the ground and hurried over to check on her beloved war horse. She felt along the mare’s legs and murmured, “Easy girl, what’s the matter, huh?”

Gabrielle reached a hand out and clasped Xena’s shoulder and in a whirlwind of sound and movement the trio found themselves transported to a different locale. Xena stood up quickly, unsheathing her sword at the same time and whirled around. “What…where? Gabrielle what’s going on?” she asked in a rush.

“Umm, surprise?” the bard said sheepishly.

“Explain,” was all Xena said to her.

Gabrielle quickly explained her meeting with Aphrodite and the goddess’s plan. The warrior listened to the words that rushed out of her partner’s mouth and sighed. She sheathed her sword and then took the opportunity to glance around at their surroundings. They were in a tranquil forest glade, there was a large body of water nearby and other than the sound of birds there was nothing amiss.

“Well, I guess if Aphrodite sent us here than she would keep us safe,” Xena mused aloud.

Gabrielle nodded. “She said you would like it. Look, you can go fishing,” the bard said pointing towards the water.

Xena rubbed her chin and thought it over. She glanced at Gabrielle and remarked, “Okay, we’ll take this little vacation.” The bard began to say something and Xena stopped her. “But, the next time you and Aphrodite come up with a plan I’d like to be informed.”

The bard nodded her answer and the two made their way over to the small cabin nestled in the trees for some well needed rest and relaxation.
